All chapters of the previous edition [see HbA 37, 2103] have been completely rewritten to cover the rapid increase in research in this area. The number of literature citations have been reduced by referring to recent review articles and the book aims at a comprehensive and critical rather than encyclopaedic summary of the data of environmental chemistry. The 1st 4 chapters deal with air, water, rocks and soils; the cycling of C, N, H, O2 and S in the biosphere are covered in 1 chapter and the elemental Other CABI sites 

The importance of vanadium (V) in the functioning of land systems is extremely diverse, as this element may exert both positive and harmful effects on terrestrial organisms. It recently become considered an element of beneficial character with a range of applications for human welfare. The health-ameliorative properties of this transition element depend on its degree of oxidation and on optimal concentration in the target cells. It was found that a similar relationship applies to vascular plants. However, excessive amounts of vanadium in the environment contaminate the soil and negatively affect the majority of living organisms. A significantly elevated level of V results in the destabilization of plant physiological balance, slowing down the growth of biomass which significantly reduces yield. In turn, low doses of the appropriate vanadium ions can stimulate plant growth and development, exert cytoprotective effects, and effectively enhance the synthesis of some biologically active compounds. We present the scientific achievements of research teams dealing with such topics. The issues discussed concern the role of vanadium in the environment, particular organisms, and highlight its dualistic influence on plants. Achievements in the field of V bioremediation, with the use of appropriately selected microorganisms and plant species, are emphasized.

A Dual Role of Vanadium in Environmental Systems-Beneficial and Detrimental Effects on Terrestrial Plants and Humans.

This study aims to evaluate temporal trends of Tantalum (Ta) and Niobium (Nb) concentrations in northern Baltic Sea sediments with focus on the potential impact from the Ronnskar sulfide ore smelter, located 15 km east of Skelleftea in northern Sweden. The potential of Ta or Nb to serve as tracers for environmental pollution caused by the electronic waste is compared. Lastly, correlations between Ta and Nb concentrations and those of major redox elements are investigated. A 35-cm-deep core was collected in the harbor bay (Kallholmsfjarden) outside of the smelter. A secondary 6-m-deep sediment core was collected in the deep Bothnian Bay for comparative purposes. Element screening analysis was conducted the using ICP-SFMS for the Kallhomsfjarden core and a combination of ICP-SFMS and ICP-OES for the Bothnian Bay core. In the final analysis, a 5-step sequential extraction technique was preformed to allow for better prediction of the fate and mobility of Ta and Nb. In the vicinity of the smelter, Ta concentration increases from 0.42 to 3.8 ppm from the time coinciding with the beginning of electronic waste processing. Conversely, Nb concentration remained stable at background levels throughout the core at 6.33 ± 0.78 ppm. The Nb/Ta ratio thus changed from 14.5 to 1.7, reflecting an increase of anthropogenic input of Ta into the bay sediments. In the pre-industrial part of the sediment, concentrations of both elements follow concentration of aluminosilicates in the core. In recent sediments, however, the anthropogenic Ta exhibits an association with hydrous ferric oxides (HFOs) and organic matter. Notable increases in Ta concentrations began following the beginning of scrap metal and electronic waste processing at the Ronnskar smelter. Anthropogenic Ta introduced in the upper portion of the sediment and are more associated with HFOs and organic material than natural Ta seen in the deeper parts of the core where detrital Ta is most common. Niobium was not affected by the Ronnskar smelter and displayed no notable change to the preindustrial background.

Tracing anthropogenic sources of Tantalum and Niobium in Bothnian Bay sediments, Sweden

Vanadium (V), niobium (Nb), and tantalum (Ta), recognized as Technology-Critical Element (TCE), are highly growing in demand for industrial development. Despite their economic relevance, little is known about their environmental concentrations, especially in marine ecosystems like mangroves. This paper describes concentrations and distribution patterns of Group Va elements (V, Nb and Ta) in plant organs and sediments from diverse mangroves of the Indian Sundarbans. Sediment cores and plant organs of eight dominant mangrove species were sampled and analyzed for V, Nb and Ta by ICP-MS. Stable carbon isotope (δ13C) in mangrove leaves were analyzed by EA-IRMS. Mean concentrations (mg kg−1) of V, Nb and Ta decreased in the order V (84.7 ± 12.5) > Nb (37.5 ± 4) > Ta (3 ± 0.8) in the sediment and V (0.6 ± 0.6) > Nb (0.02) > Ta (0.002) in the mangrove plants. Species-specific variability in bioaccumulation factor (V: 0.012–0.035; Nb: 0.001–0.003; Ta: 0.001–0.005), translocation factor (V: 0.5–5.1; Nb: 0.26–7.06; Ta: 0.22–2.56) and enrichment factor (V: 0.008–0.027; Nb: 0.0002–0.001; Ta: 1.0 × 10−5-3.0 × 10−6) indicated different partitioning of Group Va elements within the plant organs and varying degree of mangrove uptake efficiency. Results showed a general decrease in V, Nb and Ta concentrations with their increasing atomic weight. Their total concentrations in plants were related to the degree of enrichment of substrate sediments. The phytoextraction capacity varied amongst mangrove species depending on their CO2 uptake efficiency. Given increased demand for TCEs, results may have important implications for bioremediation processes.

Bioaccumulation of vanadium (V), niobium (Nb) and tantalum (Ta) in diverse mangroves of the Indian Sundarbans

Distribution of arsenic in the marine environment is associated with its biogeochemical behavior. Indeed, very few studies have been conducted along the seasonal cycle to show its non-conservative behavior in the tropical estuary. The Mahanadi River, one of the major tropical rivers in the peninsular India, drains densely populated and industrialized region of Paradeep port. Over this 1-year study, the variations of inorganic arsenic were examined along the salinity gradient of the Mahanadi estuary, with the aim to provide some insights into the mechanisms that control arsenic concentrations and behavior under estuarine mixing. Arsenic in the estuary was derived from both natural and anthropogenic sources, and it displayed partial removal from the water in the mixing zone. Results of geo-accumulation index indicated that sediments were uncontaminated and they acted as a sink for arsenic. The diffusive fluxes from water to sediment were estimated to be 9.05 μg m−2 day−1 at Chaumohona, 9.83 μg m−2 day−1 at Kaudia, and 11.85 μg m−2 day−1 at Neherubunglow. The findings of the study suggest that both the removal of arsenic by biogeochemical processes and its diffusive transport from water to sediment are of major importance for both the non-conservative behavior of arsenic in the estuary and its export to the coastal water.
