PHASAR-based WDM-devices: Principles, design and applications

WDM networks make a very effective utilization of the fiber bandwidth and offer flexible interconnections based on wavelength routing. In high capacity, dynamic WDM networks, blocking due to wavelength contention can he reduced by wavelength conversion. Wavelength conversion addresses a number of key issues in WDM networks including transparency, interoperability, and network capacity. Strictly transparent networks offer seamless interconnections with full reconfigurability and interoperability. Wavelength conversion may be the first obstacle in realizing a transparent WDM network. Among numerous wavelength conversion techniques reported to date, only a few techniques offer strict transparency. Optoelectronic conversion (O/E-E/O) techniques achieve limited transparency, yet their mature technologies allow deployment in the near future. The majority of all-optical wavelength conversion techniques also offer limited transparency but they have a potential advantage over the optoelectronic counterpart in realizing lower packaging costs and crosstalk when multiple wavelength array configurations are considered. Wavelength conversion by difference-frequency generation offers a full range of transparency while adding no excess noise to the signal. Recent experiments showed promising results including a spectral inversion and a 90 nm conversion bandwidth. This paper reviews various wavelength conversion techniques, discusses the advantages and shortcomings of each technique, and addresses their implications for transparent networks.

Wavelength conversion technologies for WDM network applications

An overview of emerging all-optical networks is given. The characteristics and alternative architectures for single-hop systems are discussed. The characteristics of lightwave technology that facilitate the design of wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) networks are reviewed, and it is explained how WDM local networks can be built based on the single-hop and multihop approaches. Various categories of single-hop systems are discussed: experimental systems, systems based on no pretransmission coordination, and systems based on pretransmission coordination, which also require a separate control channel. A simple classification for single-hop systems is provided. >

The authors have recently demonstrated 57 nm of tuning in a monolithic semiconductor laser using conventional distributed-Bragg-reflector (DBR) technology with grating elements removed in a periodic fashion. They describe the theory and design of these so-called sampled-grating tunable lasers. Optical Access Networks (OAN) The passive optical network (PON) is
an optical fiber based network architecture, which can provide much higher bandwidth
in the access network compared to traditional copper-based networks. Incorporating
wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) in a PON allows one to support much higher
bandwidth compared to the standard PON, which operates in the "single-wavelength
mode" where one wavelength is used for upstream transmission and a separate one is
used for downstream transmission. We present a comprehensive review of various
aspects of WDM-PONs proposed in the literature. This includes enabling device
technologies for WDM-PONs and network architectures, as well as the corresponding
protocols and services that may be deployed on a WDM-PON. The WDM-PON will become a
revolutionary and scalable broadband access technology that will provide high
bandwidth to end users.
