An enigma of equatorial research has been the observed seasonal and longitudinal occurrence patterns of equatorial scintillations (and range-type spread F). We resolve this problem by showing that the seasonal maxima in scintillation activity coincide with the times of year when the solar terminator is most nearly aligned with the geomagnetic flux tubes. That is, occurrence of plasma density irregularities responsible for scintillations is most likely when the integrated E-region Pedersen conductivity is changing most rapidly. Hence the hitherto puzzling seasonal pattern of scintillation activity, at a given longitude, becomes a simple deterministic function of the magnetic declination and geographic latitude of the magnetic dip equator. This demonstrated relationship is consistent with equatorial irregularity generation by the collisional Rayleigh-Taylor instability and irregularity growth enhancement by the current convective and (wind-driven) gradient drift instabilities. Some discrepancies in this relationship, however, have been found in scintillation data obtained at lower radio frequencies (below, say, 300 MHz) that suggest the presence of other irregularity-influencing processes. The role of field-aligned currents, associated with the longitudinal gradient in integrated E-region Pedersen conductivity produced at the solar terminator, in equatorial irregularity generation via the current convective instability has not been discussed previously.

Control of the seasonal and longitudinal occurrence of equatorial scintillations by the longitudinal gradient in integrated E region Pedersen conductivity

A simple model of the interaction of the equatorial ionosphere with the eastward F region neutral wind in the presence of evolving spread F bubbles is given. A consequence of the model is that the upper portions of bubbles will take on a westward tilt, while the lower portions will tilt eastward, giving rise to the 'fishtails' and 'C's' observed by coherent backscatter radar measurements of field-aligned small-scale irregularities. The essence of the model is that the plasma away from the equatorial plane (e.g., a background nighttime E region at higher latitudes) makes a finite contribution to the magnetic field line-integrated Pedersen conductivity, causing an incomplete coupling of the plasma motion to the neutral wind. The degree of coupling is then a function of the Pedersen conductivities both near the equator in the F region and in the higher-latitude E region, giving rise to vertical shears of east-west plasma motion having opposing signs on either side of the equatorial Pedersen conductivity maximum. Evolving spread F bubbles are caught up in this shear as they rise vertically, resulting in the characteristic 'C' shape seen by backscatter radar and in the westward motion of plasma bubbles observed by satellite in situ measurements.more » Numerical simulations, incorporating an eastward neutral wind in the equatorial F region and E region Pedersen conductivity effects, are presented to further support the model and analysis. The simulations also show the result that it may be the eastward as well as the westward wall of a bubble which is subject to secondary instabilities in the presence of an eastward neutral wind. In addition, even without the neutral wind the numerical simulations show that E region Pedersen conductivity effects can result in a slowing down of equatorial spread F and attendant bubble evolution.« less

Nonlinear equatorial spread F: The effect of neutral winds and background Pedersen conductivity

[1] The Global Ultraviolet Imager (GUVI) instrument carried aboard the NASA TIMED satellite measures the spectral radiance of the Earth’s far ultraviolet airglow in the spectral region from 120 to 180 nm using a cross-track scanning spectrometer design. Continuous operation of the instrument provides images of the Earth’s disk and limb in five selectable spectral bands. Also, spectra at fixed scanning mirror position can be obtained. Initial results demonstrate the quantitative functionality of the instrument for studies of the Earth’s dayglow, aurora, and ionosphere. Moreover, through forward modeling, the abundance of the major constituents of the thermosphere, O, N2, and O2 and thermospheric temperatures can be retrieved from observations of the limb radiance. Variations of the column O/N2 ratio can be deduced from sunlit disk observations. In regions of auroral precipitation not only can the aurora regions be geographically located and the auroral boundaries identified, but also the energy flux Q, the characteristic energy Eo, and a parameter fo that scales the abundance of neutral atomic oxygen can be derived. Radiance due to radiative recombination in the ionospheric F region is evident from both dayside and nightside observations of the Earth’s limb and disk, respectively. Regions of depleted F-region electron density are evident in the tropical Appleton anomaly regions, associated with so-called ionospheric ‘‘bubbles.’’ Access to the GUVI data is provided through the GUVI website www.timed.jhuapl.edu\guvi. Outstanding problems in the equatorial ionosphere–thermosphere electrodynamics relevant to spread F

C/NOFS: a Mission to Forecast Scintillations

Jicamarca radar backscatter maps were made during four consecutive nights in March 1979. Two of these maps displayed single towering plumes extending to nearly 1000-km altitude. On a third night, discussed in detail here, six plumes were generated in clear association with a nearly sinusoidal oscillation of the height of the bottomside of the F layer. The vertical amplitude of the oscillation was several hundred kilometers, and the period about 100 minutes. The plumes were generated either when the bottomside of the F layer was at the highest altitude or in the descending phase of the motion. Families of curves are presented which correspond to the solution of the dispersion relation for gravity waves capable of initiating the observed bottomside oscillations via the spatial resonance mechanism. We conclude that the solutions thus derived are reasonable and present a criterion for how well matched the gravity wave phase velocity and plasma drift have to be to produce a given perturbation in the ionization density. This criterion indicates that although initiation by a gravity wave seems likely, the gravity wave interaction cannot yield the large displacements observed without further amplification by the Rayleigh-Taylor instability. Finally, we show that the preferential generation of plumes during the descending phase of the F layer height oscillation can be explained by a generalized Rayleigh-Taylor instability operating on the distorted ionosphere with the destabilizing effects of gravity, a zonal electric field, and a zonal neutral wind included.
