TL;DR: In this paper, the b-axis conductivity of polymeric sulfur nitride (SN) x from 4.2-300K was measured for samples having different polymerization times and a general increase in the conductivity was found with longer polymerisation times leading to room temperature conductivities 1200 −3700 (Ω-cm) −1 and resistance ratios 50 −205.

TL;DR: In this article, the first synthesis of chemically pure polymeric sulfur nitride was reported, and the optical reflectance of well-characterized films of this polymeric solid has been measured from the near ultraviolet (30 000 √ n) to the far infrared (500 √ N) using the Drude-Lorentz model.
Abstract: We report the first synthesis of chemically pure polymeric sulfur nitride [${(\mathrm{SN})}_{x}$]. The optical reflectance of well-characterized films of this polymeric solid has been measured from the near ultraviolet (30 000 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$) to the far infrared (500 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$). Metallike reflectance is observed in the infrared through the visible region with a well-defined plasma minimum near 22 000 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, corresponding to light polarized parallel to the polymer chain axis. The Drude-Lorentz model is used to analyze the data, and the physical implications of the resultant parameters are discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, it is confirmed that the polymerization of aniline proceeds through a head-to-tail coupling of a cation radical, and that the participation of the ortho positions in the electropolymerization mechanism is a possibility to take into consideration.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared electronic transport properties of conjugated organic conducting polymers, polysulphur nitride, alkali-metal fulleride polymers and carbon nanotubes.
Abstract: We review and compare electronic transport in different types of conducting polymer: conjugated organic polymers, the inorganic polymer polysulphur nitride, alkali-metal fulleride polymers, and carbon nanotubes. In each case, the transport properties show some unusual features compared to conventional metals. In conjugated organic conducting polymers, electronic transport shows a systematic pattern involving both metallic and non-metallic character. We discuss the physical conduction processes that can account for this behaviour. Key roles are played by the metal-semiconductor transition as the doping level is varied, and by the limited size of crystalline regions in the polymers, which gives rise to heterogeneous conduction. Transport data provide indirect evidence that the intrinsic conductivity of doped crystalline polyacetylene, in the absence of disordered regions, is higher than that of copper at room temperature; this high conductivity is consistent with the expected suppression of backscattering in highly anisotropic ('quasi-one-dimensional') metallic conduction. Bundles of single-wall carbon nanotubes have also been found to exhibit metallic behaviour. The temperature dependence of the conductivity of bulk samples is remarkably similar to the pattern characteristic of organic conducting polymers, typically showing a crossover from metallic to non-metallic behaviour as temperature decreases. Quantized one-dimensional conductance and other quantum effects are seen in individual nanotubes.

TL;DR: In this article, the electrical conductivity of the halogen doped transpolyacetylene system, (CH)x, was studied in terms of a model of the doping process based on charge transfer.
Abstract: A study of the electrical conductivity of the halogen doped transpolyacetylene system, (CH)x, is reported. When films of trans‐ (CH)x are exposed to chlorine, bromine, or iodine vapor, uptake of halogen occurs; and the conductivity increases markedly, over eleven orders of magnitude in the case of iodine. The behavior of the halogenated polyacetylene is like that of a series of semiconductors with activation energies which vary with halogen content. The results are discussed in terms of a model of the doping process based on charge transfer.

TL;DR: The field of organic conducting polymers was ignited by the demonstration of metallic conductivity in polyacetylene as mentioned in this paper, and a retrospective view of this research area suggests some areas remain ripe for discovery/innovation.
Abstract: It has been about 40 years since the field of organic conducting polymers was ignited by the demonstration of metallic conductivity in polyacetylene. A retrospective view of this research area suggests some areas remain ripe for discovery/innovation. The breadth of activities is too large to be comprehensive; hence, selected seminal, as well as some personal, contributions will be used to illustrate concepts and anecdotal ways to think about conducting polymer systems. This Perspective can serve as a tutorial for newcomers to the field and will also remind experts about results from the past. It begins with some history and simple views of electronic structure, with selected examples. Segmented polymers containing isolated redox units will be discussed as well as how these materials can be made to have high conductivity. Key examples illustrating the matching of redox potentials are transition metal hybrid structures. Interchain interactions are emphasized along with their role in determining the nature o...
