TL;DR: Gender differences in a high-crime environment show the importance of investigating in depth the roles of both genders in the perception of insecurity and changes in routines.
Abstract: OBJECTIVE To analyze the relationships between victimization, perception of insecurity, and changes in routines. METHODS The 8,170 subjects of both sexes (49.9% women and 50.1% men) aged between 12 and 60 years, selected from a proportional stratified sampling, participated in this study. The measuring instrument was an adaptation of the National Survey on Victimization and Perception of Public Security. Chi-square tests were performed. RESULTS The results show significant differences on victimization and sex regarding perception of insecurity, restrictions on everyday activities, and protection measures. 13.1% of those interviewed claimed to have been victims of a crime in the past 12 months. 52.7% of women considered their municipality as unsafe or very unsafe. In the case of men, this percentage was 58.2%. Female victims reported significant restrictions in everyday activities when compared to non-victims. In relation to men, the percentage of victims with a high restriction of activities was higher in male victims than non-victims. In the group of victimized women, the segment of women who opted for increased measures of protection against crime was larger than expected, while those of non-victims who took less protective measures was lower than expected. These same results were observed in the group of men. CONCLUSIONS The experience of victimization implies a greater perception of insecurity. However, the climate of insecurity is widespread in a large number of citizens. Gender differences in a high-crime environment show the importance of investigating in depth the roles of both genders in the perception of insecurity and changes in routines.

TL;DR: The authors explored the social and cultural background of fear of crime in Mexico using data from a survey applied to undergraduate students and found that perceived co-rruption and low confidence in police partly explain the fear expressed by respondents.

TL;DR: In this article, a study of factors related with the perception of insecurity in residents of priority geographical polygons in Acapulco, by descriptive and correlational statistical analysis was conducted.
Abstract: This paper study factors related with the perception of insecurity in residents of priority geographical polygons in Acapulco, by descriptive and correlational statistical analysis. Data was collected through a survey, following a representative sampling within each polygon, for testing mean differences. The results revealed that the perception of insecurity is associated with schooling, confidence in the police, criminal incidence, the existence of street gangs, and the polygon of residence. Also was found a weak correlation, but statistically significant, between the perception of insecurity and the proportion of modified activities due to fear of crime, which in turn is associated with sex, age group, criminal incidence, and its polygon.

TL;DR: In this paper, a pilot project on social cohesion and the perception of insecurity in one of the most popular neighborhoods in the Extremaduran city of Caceres, known as the Aldea Moret neighborhood, was carried out.
EnglishThe community has played a critical role in preventing antisocial and criminal behavior. The criminological literature has been studying since the beginning of the 20th century the relationship between the characteristics of the neighborhoods and the crime and antisocial rate that occurs in them. From the well-known criminological theory of social disorganization, to other more contemporary ones such as that of collective efficacy, they have studied the effects that neighborhood characteristics display on antisocial or delinquent behaviors. The main objective of this work has been to carry out a pilot project on social cohesion and the perception of insecurity in one of the most popular neighborhoods in the Extremaduran city of Caceres, known as the Aldea Moret neighborhood. Social cohesion is one of the main concepts used by one of the most important ecological theories in criminology in recent years, such as the theory of collective efficacy, to explain the relationship between the community and crime. This study not only allows us to get to know issues related to social cohesion and the perception of insecurity in a neighborhood, but also to study criminological theories little worked in our country.
