Abstract: Social workers are needed to implement science-based treatments for alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems. Changes in insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act will increase the demand for licensed Master of Social Work (MSW) clinicians. This national study of MSW programs (N = 210) examines prevalence of addiction courses and specializations. Web-based analyses showed that only 14.3% of accredited schools offered specialization; only 4.7% of accredited schools had one or more required courses. Social work education has not met addiction workforce development needs; there is no evidence this pattern will change.

Abstract: COVID-19 shocked health and economic systems leaving millions of people without employment and safety nets. The pandemic disproportionately affects people with substance use disorders (SUDs) due to the collision between SUDs and COVID-19. Comorbidities and risk environments for SUDs are likely risk factors for COVID-19. The pandemic, in turn, diminishes resources that people with SUD need for their recovery and well-being. This article presents an interdisciplinary and international perspective on how COVID-19 and the related systemic shock impact on individuals with SUDs directly and indirectly. We highlight a need to understand SUDs as biopsychosocial disorders and use evidence-based policies to destigmatize SUDs. We recommend a suite of multi-sectorial actions and strategies to strengthen, modernize and complement addiction care systems which will become resilient and responsive to future systemic shocks similar to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract: Author(s): Wamsley, Maria; Satterfield, Jason M; Curtis, Alexa; Lundgren, Lena; Satre, Derek D | Abstract: ObjectivesScreening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) can effectively identify and address substance misuse and substance use disorders (SUDs), and can be delivered by a range of trained health professionals. Yet, barriers remain to effective training and implementation of SBIRT in health and social service settings, and models of interprofessional collaboration in SBIRT delivery are underdeveloped.MethodsWe reviewed current literature regarding SBIRT effectiveness, training, and implementation by physicians, nurses, psychologists, and social workers. An SBIRT expert and representative from each health profession synthesized literature and training experiences to inform the development of interprofessional training and collaborative implementation strategies.ResultsEach of the health professions involved in SBIRT training and implementation have strengths and weaknesses that influence how SBIRT is taught, learned, and delivered. Some of these are specific to the components of SBIRT, for example, screening versus brief intervention, whereas others depend on profession-driven competencies, for example, motivational interviewing. Professional organizations have encouraged a range of tailored SBIRT training initiatives, but true interprofessional training and the implementation of collaborative, team-based care are largely unrealized.ConclusionsSBIRT can be a valuable approach to screening and treatment for SUDs when delivered by a range of healthcare professionals. Abstract: Background: Counseling and social work programs educate future practitioners who are likely to be engaged in direct practice with individuals impacted by substance use disorders. Recent changes to policy and practice, including the Affordable Health Care Act and DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition), contribute to the ongoing need to develop substance abuse competencies among mental health professionals at all educational levels and across multiple disciplines. Methods: The authors reviewed programs of study and course catalogs identified and accessed online for counselor education, Bachelor of Social Work, and Master of Social Work programs to identify offered and required courses focused on substance abuse, as determined by course title and description. Results: Of the 97 master's-level counseling programs reviewed, 67 required at least 1 course in substance abuse and 12 offered at least 1 elective in substance abuse. Abstract: Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based protocol that addresses both moderate-risk and high-risk substance use problems for individuals. In an urban college’s master’s and bachelor’s social work programs with 218 students, SBIRT training was introduced into core course curricula, with many students subsequently using SBIRT in their field placements. Evaluation of the initiative demonstrated increases in the students’ knowledge and favorable attitudes regarding working with substance using clients. Students’ ratings of the usefulness and effectiveness of SBIRT were high. In response to studies indicating the lack of preparedness of graduating social work students to work with substance users, this study demonstrated the effectiveness of SBIRT training to educate students to work with this population.
