Interfacial interaction between NiMoP and NiFe-LDH to regulate the electronic structure toward high-efficiency electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction

The development of efficient electrochemical seawater splitting catalysts for large-scale hydrogen production is of great importance. In this work, we report an amorphous Co-Mo-B film on Ni foam (Co-Mo-B/NF) via a facile one-step electrodeposition process. Such amorphous Co-Mo-B/NF possesses superior activity with a small overpotential of 199 mV at 100 mA cm−2 for a hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline seawater. Notably, Co-Mo-B/NF also maintains excellent stability for at least 24 h under alkaline seawater electrolysis.

Amorphous Co-Mo-B Film: A High-Active Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Generation in Alkaline Seawater

The hydrogen production by water electrolysis has attracted great research interest as a sustainable approach for clean energy production. However, such process is plagued by the use of high‐cost precious metal‐based catalysts (such as Pt, RuO2). Hereby, the use of a low‐cost Nitrogen and Sulfur co‐doped carbon‐supported cobalt sulfide dual‐functional electrocatalyst derived from imidazole modified lignin for overall water splitting is presented. To introduce nitrogen and sulfur heteroatoms in the carbon structure, lignin is modified by imidazolation through thiol‐alkynes click reaction. Imidazole‐lignin shows a strong chelation tendancy with cobalt salt, and N and the S co‐doped cobalt sulfide catalyst (IL‐Co@GC‐PO) is obtained by pyrolysis. The IL‐Co@GC‐PO has an oxygen evolution potential of 1.57 V and a hydrogen evolution overpotential of 204 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2. During the overall water splitting process, the IL‐Co@GC‐PO catalysts require only 1.58 V to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2, which is equivalent to the performance of the system composed of the noble metal Pt/C||RuO2. This work not only provides a strategy for the preparation of N and S co‐doped cobalt sulfide catalysts, but also provides guidance for using lignin as a carbon source to design and develop cheap electrocatalysts.

Interface-assisted phase transition in MOF-derived MoS2/CoS2 heterostructures for highly efficient dual-pH hydrogen evolution and overall water splitting


 There has never been a more pressing need to develop sustainable energy systems as dramatic climate changes emerge across the world. Some of the effects can be alleviated by the development of efficient devices that are capable of producing hydrogen gas in an environmentally acceptable manner, which in turn can be employed as a clean fuel. In this context, the splitting of water is especially attractive. However, this technology requires the design of new cost-effective electrocatalytic materials. In this review, the progress made in the development of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and their composites as electrocatalysts for both acidic and alkaline electrolysis cells and as photocatalysts for the formation of hydrogen is described and discussed. Following a short introduction to the mechanisms of the electrochemical hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions and the photoelectrochemical generation of hydrogen, an introduction to TMDs, their relevant general properties and the methods used in their synthesis are described. Then, the performance of various TMD-based materials in the electrochemical splitting of water is discussed, with a final brief overview of the application of TMDs in photoelectrochemical devices. Although challenges clearly remain, TMD-based materials are emerging as promising electrocatalysts and photoelectrocatalysts for the production of hydrogen.
