YAGO2: A spatially and temporally enhanced knowledge base from Wikipedia

Coh-Metrix is among the broadest and most sophisticated automated textual assessment tools available today. Automated Evaluation of Text and Discourse with Coh-Metrix describes this computational tool, as well as the wide range of language and discourse measures it provides. Section I of the book focuses on the theoretical perspectives that led to the development of Coh-Metrix, its measures, and empirical work that has been conducted using this approach. Section II shifts to the practical arena, describing how to use Coh-Metrix and how to analyze, interpret, and describe results. Coh-Metrix opens the door to a new paradigm of research that coordinates studies of language, corpus analysis, computational linguistics, education, and cognitive science. This tool empowers anyone with an interest in text to pursue a wide array of previously unanswerable research questions.

The trouble with computers: Usefulness, usability and productivity

This paper discusses Nimrod, a tool for performing parametrised simulations over networks of loosely coupled workstations. Using Nimrod the user interactively generates a parametrised experiment. Nimrod then controls the distribution of jobs to machines and the collection of results. A simple graphical user interface which is built for each application allows the user to view the simulation in terms of their problem domain. The current version of Nimrod is implemented above OSF DCE and runs on DEC Alpha and IBM RS6000 workstations (including a 22 node SP2). Two different case studies are discussed as an illustration of the utility of the system.

The promise and the cost of object technology: a five-year forecast

Considerable effort and expense have been devoted to developing tools that support parallel programming. Recent evidence has show that users do not find the current generation of tools useful far their program development needs, but offers no guidance on how that problem might be addressed. This paper reports the results of a survey applied to a significant cross-section of the parallel user community (448 participants). The responses establish a number of general patterns in program development and tool use among scientists, engineers, and computer scientists. Our analysis suggests several likely directions for future tool development efforts. >
