TL;DR: A unique method for functionalizing commercially available surgical masks with outstanding self-cleaning and photothermal properties is reported and this graphene-coated mask can be recycled directly for use in solar-driven desalination with outstanding salt-rejection performance for long-term use.
Abstract: The 2019 coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19) is affecting over 210 countries and territories, and it is spreading mainly by respiratory droplets. The use of disposable surgical masks is common for patients, doctors, and even the general public in highly risky areas. However, the current surgical masks cannot self-sterilize in order to reuse or be recycled for other applications. The resulting high economic and environmental costs are further damaging societies worldwide. Herein, we reported a unique method for functionalizing commercially available surgical masks with outstanding self-cleaning and photothermal properties. A dual-mode laser-induced forward transfer method was developed for depositing few-layer graphene onto low-melting temperature nonwoven masks. Superhydrophobic states were observed on the treated masks' surfaces, which can cause the incoming aqueous droplets to bounce off. Under sunlight illumination, the surface temperature of the functional mask can quickly increase to over 80 °C, making the masks reusable after sunlight sterilization. In addition, this graphene-coated mask can be recycled directly for use in solar-driven desalination with outstanding salt-rejection performance for long-term use. These roll-to-roll production-line-compatible masks can provide us with better protection against this severe virus. The environment can also benefit from the direct recycling of these masks, which can be used for desalinating seawater.

TL;DR: In this article, a model-based simulation system is presented for the analysis of surface roughness generation in ultra-precision diamond turning, which takes into account the effect of tool geometry, process parameters and relative tool-work vibration.
Abstract: In this paper, a model-based simulation system is presented for the analysis of surface roughness generation in ultra-precision diamond turning. The system is based on a surface roughness model which takes into account the effect of tool geometry, process parameters and relative tool-work vibration. It is evaluated through a series of cutting experiments. The results indicate that the system can predict well the surface roughness profile and the roughness parameters of a diamond turned surface under various cutting conditions. With the use of the spectrum analysis techniques, the system can also help to analyze the effect of vibration on the surface quality of workpiece and to diagnose the machine faults. The potential application of the system in process optimization is also discussed in the text.

TL;DR: In this article, a parametric analysis of single-point diamond turning (SPDT) is presented, where the properties of the surface roughness profiles are extracted and analyzed using the power spectrum analysis method.
Abstract: This paper describes a parametric analysis of nanosurface generation in single-point diamond turning (SPDT). The properties of the surface roughness profiles were extracted and analysed using the power spectrum analysis method. A series of face cutting experiments was undertaken on an aluminium alloy under various cutting conditions. The results indicate that the power spectrum of a surface roughness profile is basically composed of several periodical components that can be correlated to different process parameters and mechanisms of surface generation. Moreover, it is found that the tool feed, tool geometry, spindle error motions and relative vibration between the tool and the workpiece are not the only dominant components contributing to the surface generation in SPDT. Materials swelling and tool interference are other important factors. Based on these findings, relationships are proposed to explain the influence of tool interference on the variation of the spectral components and process parameters. The implications of these findings on the optimisation of the surface quality in SPDT are also discussed.

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems.
Abstract: Three parallel algorithms for classical molecular dynamics are presented. The first assigns each processor a fixed subset of atoms; the second assigns each a fixed subset of inter-atomic forces to compute; the third assigns each a fixed spatial region. The algorithms are suitable for molecular dynamics models which can be difficult to parallelize efficiently—those with short-range forces where the neighbors of each atom change rapidly. They can be implemented on any distributed-memory parallel machine which allows for message-passing of data between independently executing processors. The algorithms are tested on a standard Lennard-Jones benchmark problem for system sizes ranging from 500 to 100,000,000 atoms on several parallel supercomputers--the nCUBE 2, Intel iPSC/860 and Paragon, and Cray T3D. Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems. For large problems, the spatial algorithm achieves parallel efficiencies of 90% and a 1840-node Intel Paragon performs up to 165 faster than a single Cray C9O processor. Trade-offs between the three algorithms and guidelines for adapting them to more complex molecular dynamics simulations are also discussed.

TL;DR: A critical discussion of the scientific literature on hyper-heuristics including their origin and intellectual roots, a detailed account of the main types of approaches, and an overview of some related areas are presented.
Abstract: Hyper-heuristics comprise a set of approaches that are motivated (at least in part) by the goal of automating the design of heuristic methods to solve hard computational search problems. An underlying strategic research challenge is to develop more generally applicable search methodologies. The term hyper-heuristic is relatively new; it was first used in 2000 to describe heuristics to choose heuristics in the context of combinatorial optimisation. However, the idea of automating the design of heuristics is not new; it can be traced back to the 1960s. The definition of hyper-heuristics has been recently extended to refer to a search method or learning mechanism for selecting or generating heuristics to solve computational search problems. Two main hyper-heuristic categories can be considered: heuristic selection and heuristic generation. The distinguishing feature of hyper-heuristics is that they operate on a search space of heuristics (or heuristic components) rather than directly on the search space of solutions to the underlying problem that is being addressed. This paper presents a critical discussion of the scientific literature on hyper-heuristics including their origin and intellectual roots, a detailed account of the main types of approaches, and an overview of some related areas. Current research trends and directions for future research are also discussed.
