TL;DR: The presented methods in the book are based on linear and nonlinear dynamic mathematical models of the systems, which include various control systems, actuators, sensors, computer systems, communication systems, and mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical and electronic devices.
Abstract: The problem of fault diagnosis and reconfigurable control is a new and actually developing field of science and engineering. The subject becomes more interesting since there is an increasing demand for the navigation and control systems of aerospace vehicles, automated actuators etc. to be more safe and reliable. Nowadays, the problems of fault detection and isolation and reconfigurable control attract the attention the scientists in the world. The subject is emphasized in the recent international congresses such as IF AC World Congresses (San Francisco-1996, Beijing-1999, and Barcelona-2002) and lMEKO World Congresses (Tampere-1997, Osaka-1999, Vienna-2000), and also in the international conferences on fault diagnosis such as SAFEPROCESS Conferences (Hull-1997, Budapest-2000). The presented methods in the book are based on linear and nonlinear dynamic mathematical models of the systems. Technical objects and systems stated by these models are very large, and include various control systems, actuators, sensors, computer systems, communication systems, and mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical and electronic devices. The analytical fault diagnosis techniques of these objects have been developed for several decades. Many of those techniques are based on the use of the results of modem control theory. This is natural, because it is known that fault diagnosis process in control systems is considered as a part of general control process. xxii In organization of fault diagnosis of control systems, the use of the concepts and methods of modem control theory including concepts of state space, modeling, controllability, observability, estimation, identification, and filtering is very efficient.

TL;DR: Two different RUKF algorithms, one with single scale factor and one with multiple scale factors, are proposed and applied for the attitude estimation process of a pico satellite and the results of these algorithms are compared for different types of measurement faults in different estimation scenarios.
Abstract: In the normal operation conditions of a pico satellite, a conventional Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) gives sufficiently good estimation results However, if the measurements are not reliable because of any kind of malfunction in the estimation system, UKF gives inaccurate results and diverges by time This study introduces Robust Unscented Kalman Filter (RUKF) algorithms with the filter gain correction for the case of measurement malfunctions By the use of defined variables named as measurement noise scale factor, the faulty measurements are taken into consideration with a small weight, and the estimations are corrected without affecting the characteristics of the accurate ones Two different RUKF algorithms, one with single scale factor and one with multiple scale factors, are proposed and applied for the attitude estimation process of a pico satellite The results of these algorithms are compared for different types of measurement faults in different estimation scenarios and recommendations about their applications are given

TL;DR: In this paper, a fault-tolerant attitude estimation algorithm for pico satellites is proposed, which uses a robust adaptive unscented Kalman filter (UKF) which performs correction for the process noise covariance (Q-adaptation) or measurement noise covariances (R-adaptance) depending on the type of the fault.
Abstract: SUMMARY Unscented Kalman filter (UKF) is a filtering algorithm that gives sufficiently good estimation results for the estimation problems of nonlinear systems even when high nonlinearity is in question. However, in case of system uncertainty or measurement malfunctions, the UKF becomes inaccurate and diverges by time. This study introduces a fault-tolerant attitude estimation algorithm for pico satellites. The algorithm uses a robust adaptive UKF, which performs correction for the process noise covariance (Q-adaptation) or measurement noise covariance (R-adaptation) depending on the type of the fault. By the use of a newly proposed adaptation scheme for the conventional UKF algorithm, the fault is detected and isolated, and the essential adaptation procedure is followed in accordance with the fault type. The proposed algorithm is tested as a part of the attitude estimation algorithm of a pico satellite. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

TL;DR: The three-part survey paper aims to give a comprehensive review of real-time fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control, with particular attention on the results reported in the last decade.
Abstract: With the continuous increase in complexity and expense of industrial systems, there is less tolerance for performance degradation, productivity decrease, and safety hazards, which greatly necessitates to detect and identify any kinds of potential abnormalities and faults as early as possible and implement real-time fault-tolerant operation for minimizing performance degradation and avoiding dangerous situations. During the last four decades, fruitful results have been reported about fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control methods and their applications in a variety of engineering systems. The three-part survey paper aims to give a comprehensive review of real-time fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control, with particular attention on the results reported in the last decade. In this paper, fault diagnosis approaches and their applications are comprehensively reviewed from model- and signal-based perspectives, respectively.

TL;DR: The Communication program emphasizes theory, research, and application to examine the ways humans communicate, verbally and non-verbally, across a variety of levels and contexts, to understand ourselves, the authors' media, their relationships, their culture and how these things connect.
Abstract: The Communication program emphasizes theory, research, and application to examine the ways humans communicate, verbally and non-verbally, across a variety of levels and contexts. This is particularly important as communication shapes our ideas and values, gives rise to our politics, consumption and socialization, and helps to define our identities and realities. Its power and potential is inestimable. From the briefest of text messages to the grandest of public declarations, we indeed live within communication and invite you to join us in appreciating its increasing importance in contemporary society. From Twitter and reality television to family relationships and workplace dynamics, communication is about understanding ourselves, our media, our relationships, our culture and how these things connect.
