TL;DR: A review of articles on liquid-phase organic syntheses in microreactors in 2011-2012 is presented in this paper, where the main topics discussed in this review are noncatalytic and homogeneously catalyzed reactions, multistep syntheses, heterogeneous catalyzed reaction, microwave-assisted reactions, and photocatalytic reactions.

TL;DR: In this article, the formation of N-and S-containing heterocycles, initiated by gold-catalyzed nucleophilic attack of N or S-nucleophiles onto alkynes, is discussed.
Abstract: This review covers the formation of N- and S-containing heterocycles, initiated by gold-catalyzed nucleophilic attack of N- or S-nucleophiles onto alkynes. These types of nucleophiles have been somewhat overlooked as compared to their C- or O-counterparts in other reviews. In this particular work, their intramolecular gold-mediated attack onto alkynes is reviewed in depth. It is structured in such a fashion that the reader will get a clear view of which substrates react in which cyclization mode.

TL;DR: Preliminary data show that H(2) MF can be readily isomerized thermally to 5-hydroxy-4-keto-pentenoic acid oligomers, applicable to related bio-based furfurals.
Abstract: Singlet-oxygen oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) was performed in continuous flow mode using rose Bengal as photosensitizer. The resulting butenolide ((HMF)-M-2) was formed selectively in high yield. The procedure proved to be scalable and applicable to related bio-based furfurals. Furthermore, preliminary data show that (HMF)-M-2 can be readily isomerized thermally to 5-hydroxy-4-keto-pentenoic acid oligomers.

TL;DR: Both fully substituted ionic liquids and 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bromide were barely biodegradable and the elongation of the alkyl side chain made the IL more susceptible for microbiological decomposition.
Abstract: Biological properties of ionic liquids (ILs) have been usually tested with the help of standard biodegradation or ecotoxicity tests. So far, several articles on the identification of intermediate metabolites of microbiological decay of ILs have been published. Simultaneously, the number of novel ILs with unrecognized characteristics regarding biodegradability and effect on organisms and environment is still increasing. In this work, seven imidazolium ionic liquids of different chemical structure were studied. Three of them are 1-alkyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bromides, while the other four are tetra- or completely substituted imidazolium iodides. This study focused on the identification of intermediate metabolites of the aforementioned ionic liquids subjected to biodegradation in a laboratory activated sludge system. Both fully substituted ionic liquids and 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bromide were barely biodegradable. In the case of two of them, no biotransformation products were detected. The elongation of the alkyl side chain made the IL more susceptible for microbiological decomposition. 1-Decyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bromide was biotransformed most easily. Its primary biodegradation up to 100 % could be achieved. Nevertheless, the cleavage of the imidazolium ring has not been observed.

Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: In this paper, a review of cost effective technologies and the processes to convert biomass into useful liquid bio-fuels and bioproducts, with particular focus on some biorefinery concepts based on different feedstocks aiming at the integral utilization of these feedstocks for the production of value added chemicals.
Abstract: Sustainable economic and industrial growth requires safe, sustainable resources of energy. For the future re-arrangement of a sustainable economy to biological raw materials, completely new approaches in research and development, production, and economy are necessary. The ‘first-generation’ biofuels appear unsustainable because of the potential stress that their production places on food commodities. For organic chemicals and materials these needs to follow a biorefinery model under environmentally sustainable conditions. Where these operate at present, their product range is largely limited to simple materials (i.e. cellulose, ethanol, and biofuels). Second generation biorefineries need to build on the need for sustainable chemical products through modern and proven green chemical technologies such as bioprocessing including pyrolysis, Fisher Tropsch, and other catalytic processes in order to make more complex molecules and materials on which a future sustainable society will be based. This review focus on cost effective technologies and the processes to convert biomass into useful liquid biofuels and bioproducts, with particular focus on some biorefinery concepts based on different feedstocks aiming at the integral utilization of these feedstocks for the production of value added chemicals.
