Abstract: Several 1-phosphono-2-aza-1,3-butadienes, 1 and 13−20, were evaluated in the reaction with different enolate-type nucleophiles to induce addition at the 1- or the 4-position of the azadiene. 1-Phosphono-2-azadienes 1 react with sodium malonate at the 1-position, leading to the formation of bisenamines 12 after elimination of the phosphonate moiety. On the contrary, sodium malonate adds at the 4-position of 1-aryl-1-phosphono-2-azadienes 14−19 when the azadienes bear a halogenated phenyl substituent, and the resulting addition products 21−26 are easily transformed into the corresponding phosphonylated γ-lactams 35−40. The regioselectivity of the addition is explained by reversal of polarization of the azadiene due to the electron-withdrawing character of the halogenated phenyl substituents.

Abstract: Aliphatic aldehydes were deuterated at the α-position via a base-catalyzed exchange reaction with D2O. These deuterated building blocks were used for the synthesis of labelled analogues of quorum sensing signal molecules belonging to the three major classes of naturally occurring N-acylated homoserine lactones (AHLs), with the label on a non-enolizable and therefore stable position. Besides the application of these stable isotope-labelled AHLs as a labelled standard for analysis via isotope dilution mass spectrometry, these compounds can be used to study the metabolic fate of the fatty acid tail of the AHL-molecule. These isotope-labelled compounds were fully characterized and used to synthesize the deuterated analogues of two commonly occurring AHL-degradation products, a tetramic acid and a ring opened N-acyl homoserine.

Abstract: Sustainable economic and industrial growth requires safe, sustainable resources of energy. For the future re-arrangement of a sustainable economy to biological raw materials, completely new approaches in research and development, production, and economy are necessary. The ‘first-generation’ biofuels appear unsustainable because of the potential stress that their production places on food commodities. For organic chemicals and materials these needs to follow a biorefinery model under environmentally sustainable conditions. Where these operate at present, their product range is largely limited to simple materials (i.e. cellulose, ethanol, and biofuels). Second generation biorefineries need to build on the need for sustainable chemical products through modern and proven green chemical technologies such as bioprocessing including pyrolysis, Fisher Tropsch, and other catalytic processes in order to make more complex molecules and materials on which a future sustainable society will be based. This review focus on cost effective technologies and the processes to convert biomass into useful liquid biofuels and bioproducts, with particular focus on some biorefinery concepts based on different feedstocks aiming at the integral utilization of these feedstocks for the production of value added chemicals.
