As of December 2012, Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) in Iraq have resulted in the deployment of about 22 million troops; there have been 2,222 US fatalities in OEF and Operation New Dawn (OND)1 and 4,422 in OIF The numbers of wounded US troops exceed 16,000 in Afghanistan and 32,000 in Iraq In addition to deaths and morbidity, the operations have unforeseen consequences that are yet to be fully understoodIn contrast with previous conflicts, the all-volunteer military has experienced numerous deployments of individual service members; has seen increased deployments of women, parents of young children, and reserve and National Guard troops; and in some cases has been subject to longer deployments and shorter times at home between deployments Numerous reports in the popular press have made the public aware of issues that have pointed to the difficulty of military personnel in readjusting after returning from Iraq and Afghanistan Many of those who have served in OEF and OIF readjust with few difficulties, but others have problems in readjusting to home, reconnecting with family members, finding employment, and returning to schoolIn response to the return of large numbers of veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan with physical-health and mental-health problems and to the growing readjustment needs of active duty service members, veterans, and their family members, Congress included Section 1661 of the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2008 That section required the secretary of defense, in consultation with the secretary of veterans affairs, to enter into an agreement with the National Academies for a study of the physical-health, mental-health, and other readjustment needs of members and former members of the armed forces who were deployed in OIF or OEF, their families, and their communities as a result of such deploymentThe study consisted of two phases The Phase 1 task was to conduct a preliminary assessment The Phase 2 task was to provide a comprehensive assessment of the physical, psychologic, social, and economic effects of deployment on and identification of gaps in care for members and former members, their families, and their communities The Phase 1 report was completed in March 2010 and delivered to the Department of Defense (DOD), the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and the relevant committees of the House of Representatives and the Senate The secretaries of DOD and VA responded to the Phase 1 report in September 2010 Returning Home from Iraq and Afghanistan: Assessment of Readjustment Needs of Veterans, Service Members, and Their Families fulfills the requirement for Phase 2

Returning Home from Iraq and Afghanistan: Preliminary Assessment of Readjustment Needs of Veterans, Service Members, and Their Families

Objectives:This article reports the first science mapping analysis of the social work field, which shows its conceptual structure and scientific evolution.Methods:Science Mapping Analysis Software Tool, a bibliometric science mapping tool based on co-word analysis and h-index, is applied using a sample of 18,794 research articles published from 1930 to 2012 in 25 main social work journals indexed in the Journal Citation Reports of the Web of Science.Results:Published research social work field concentrated in eight main thematic areas: children, social services, health care, violence, women, HIV/AIDS, social workers, and education. HIV/AIDS and violence have recently attracted the interest of the social word scientific community, while the rest are classical thematic areas that still attract the interest and efforts of the researchers.Conclusion:This conceptual and empirical analysis shows how research themes have evolved in social work.

Analyzing the Scientific Evolution of Social Work Using Science Mapping

This exploratory study investigated the rate of citation errors in the reference lists of five social work journals. High error rates have been found in journals in fields such as medicine and psychology but have not yet been investigated in social work journals. A stratified, computer-generated random sample was selected (N = 500, 100 per journal), and each reference was verified against the original work for accuracy in six fields: article title, author name(s), journal title, pagination, volume, and year. In examining the total sample of 500 references across the five journals, 206 references (41.2%) contained at least one error. Suggestions for reduction of error rates are discussed, as are suggestions for future study in this area.

Over the course of the last three decades more attention has been paid to the lives of lesbian adolescents within society. However this population continues to be underrepresented within the social work literature. Specifically there remains a dearth of empirical data on the early expression of lesbian identity and how this process relates to self-esteem. The research that has been conducted suggests that one of the best predictors of self-esteem for lesbian youth is the recognition of a same-sex attraction during early adolescence. In fact girls who incorporate their lesbian identity at an early age appear to have especially high self-esteem. The present study provides empirical data about lesbian youth identity through the examination of the relationship between lesbian identity development and self-esteem during adolescence and young adulthood. Using McCarn and Fassingers (1996) model of lesbian identity development self-esteem is assessed in relation to phases of development in the two dimensions of lesbian identity: individual sexual identity and group membership identity. The Relationship Between Self-Esteem and Lesbian Identity During Adolescence

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with depression, alcohol use disorders and physical health problems. Subthreshold posttraumatic syndromes may contribute to these problems. Participants were previously deployed male peacekeepers who completed a battery of questionnaires, including measures of PTSD symptoms, depression, alcohol use, and physical health. Statistically significant differences were found 1) between groups with full and no PTSD on depressive symptoms, alcohol use disorders, and physical health problems, and 2) between subthreshold and no PTSD groups on depression and physical health problems. Results suggest subthreshold PTSD represents a distinct construct warranting further investigation.

Subthreshold PTSD: A Comparison of Alcohol, Depression, and Health Problems in Canadian Peacekeepers with Different Levels of Traumatic Stress

The current study investigated the relationship between sex-role beliefs and attitudes toward same-sex couple adoptions as suggested by Feminist and Queer theory. A mailed questionnaire was used to collect data from a purposive sample of adoption workers and social work students. The questionnaire included an abbreviated version of the Sex-Role Egalitarianism Scale and the newly created Attitudes Toward Same-Sex Couples as Adoptive Parents Scale. Findings supported the existence of a positive, linear relationship between sex-role beliefs and attitudes. Implications of the results, limitations of the investigation, and directions for future research are presented.
