Journal ArticleDOI
Identification of a novel plasmid-mediated colistin-resistance gene, mcr-2, in Escherichia coli, Belgium, June 2016.
Basil Britto Xavier,Christine Lammens,Rohit Ruhal,Samir Kumar-Singh,Patrick Butaye,Patrick Butaye,Herman Goossens,Surbhi Malhotra-Kumar +7 more
TL;DR: Prevalence of mcr-2 in porcine colistin-resistant E. coli (11/53) in Belgium was higher than that of mCr-1 (7/53), and data call for an immediate introduction of mCR-2 screening in ongoing molecular epidemiological surveillance of colistIn-resistant Gram-negative pathogens.
Journal ArticleDOI
Development of a Multiplex PCR for the Detection of asa1, gelE, cylA, esp, and hyl Genes in Enterococci and Survey for Virulence Determinants among European Hospital Isolates of Enterococcus faecium
Vanessa Vankerckhoven,Tim Van Autgaerden,Carl Vael,Christine Lammens,Sabine Chapelle,Rosaria Rossi,Daniela Jabes,Herman Goossens,Herman Goossens +8 more
TL;DR: The multiplex PCR reported in this study is a convenient and rapid method for the simultaneous detection of the virulence genes asa1, gelE, cylA, esp, and hyl in enterococci.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of azithromycin and clarithromycin therapy on pharyngeal carriage of macrolide-resistant streptococci in healthy volunteers: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study
Surbhi Malhotra-Kumar,Christine Lammens,Samuel Coenen,Samuel Coenen,Koen Van Herck,Herman Goossens,Herman Goossens +6 more
TL;DR: This study shows that macrolides use is the single most important driver of the emergence of macrolide resistance in vivo, and Physicians prescribing antibiotics should take into account the striking ecological side-effects of such antibiotics.
Journal ArticleDOI
Use of serum C reactive protein and procalcitonin concentrations in addition to symptoms and signs to predict pneumonia in patients presenting to primary care with acute cough: diagnostic study.
S. F. van Vugt,Berna D L Broekhuizen,Christine Lammens,Nicolaas P.A. Zuithoff,P. A. de Jong,Samuel Coenen,Margareta Ieven,Christopher C Butler,Herman Goossens,Paul Little,Th J M Verheij +10 more
TL;DR: A clinical rule based on symptoms and signs to predict pneumonia in patients presenting to primary care with acute cough performed best in patients with mild or severe clinical presentation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Antimicrobial susceptibilities of Campylobacter strains isolated from food animals in Belgium
Marleen Van Looveren,Georges Daube,Lieven De Zutter,Jean-Marie Dumont,Christine Lammens,Monik Wijdooghe,Peter Vandamme,M. Jouret,M. Cornélis,Herman Goossens +9 more
TL;DR: Alarmingly high rates of resistance to ciprofloxacin were noted, particularly for C. coli isolated from pigs and broilers, which indicates that resistance of Campylobacter in humans could derive from animals.
