Abstract: Bicycling is a popular recreational activity for youth but can also be pursued as a competitive sport. This chapter provides a broad overview of the different types of bikes and disciplines within cycling, with particular focus on mountain biking, and introduces common bike terminology, general bike fit principles, cycling biomechanics, and gearing concepts. It then presents evidence-based information on bicycle-related injuries, including epidemiology and rates, risk factors and mechanisms, types and body parts, and guidance on focused history, exam, and return to sport considerations. The chapter ends with a discussion on injury prevention strategies that includes equipment, safe riding skills and behavior, off-the-bike programs, and bicycling infrastructure design.
