Alcohol Consumption, Cigarette Smoking, and the Risk of Recurrent Acute and Chronic Pancreatitis
Dhiraj Yadav,Robert H. Hawes,Randall E. Brand,Michelle A. Anderson,Mary E. Money,Peter A. Banks,Michele D. Bishop,John Baillie,Stuart Sherman,James A. DiSario,Frank R. Burton,Timothy B. Gardner,Stephen T. Amann,Andres Gelrud,Christopher Lawrence,Beth Elinoff,Julia B. Greer,Michael O’Connell,M. Michael Barmada,Adam Slivka,David C. Whitcomb +20 more
TL;DR: Very heavy alcohol consumption and smoking are independent risks for CP, and a minority of patients with pancreatitis currently seen at US referral centers report very heavy drinking.
Journal ArticleDOI
Common genetic variants in the CLDN2 and PRSS1-PRSS2 loci alter risk for alcohol-related and sporadic pancreatitis
David C. Whitcomb,Jessica LaRusch,Alyssa M. Krasinskas,Lambertus Klei,Jill P. Smith,Randall E. Brand,John P. Neoptolemos,Markus M. Lerch,Matt Tector,Bimaljit S. Sandhu,Nalini M. TL;DR: Two associations at genome-wide significance identified and replicated at PRSS1-PRSS2 and X-linked CLDN2 are reported and could partially explain the high frequency of alcohol-related pancreatitis in men.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mechanisms of CFTR functional variants that impair regulated bicarbonate permeation and increase risk for pancreatitis but not for cystic fibrosis.
Jessica LaRusch,Jinsei Jung,Ignacio J. General,Michele D. Lewis,Hyun Woo Park,Randall E. Brand,Andres Gelrud,Michelle A. Anderson,Peter A. Banks,Darwin L. Conwell,Christopher Lawrence,Joseph Romagnuolo,John Baillie,Samer Alkaade,Gregory A. Cote,Timothy B. Gardner,Stephen T. Amann,Adam Slivka,Bimaljit S. Sandhu,Amy Aloe,Michelle L. Kienholz,Dhiraj Yadav,M. Michael Barmada,Ivet Bahar,Min Goo Lee,David C. Whitcomb +25 more
TL;DR: WNK1-SPAK pathway-activated increases in CFTR bicarbonate permeability are altered by CFTRBD variants through multiple mechanisms, and molecular dynamics simulations suggest physical restriction of the CFTR channel and altered dynamic channel regulation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Disconnected pancreatic tail syndrome: potential for endoscopic therapy and results of long-term follow-up
Christopher Lawrence,Douglas A. Howell,Andreas M. Stefan,Donald E. Conklin,Frank J. Lukens,Ronald F. Martin,Andrew Landes,Becky Benz +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented a single-center experience with this entity that emphasizes the feasibility of endoscopic therapy and long-term outcomes of patients with complete pancreaticduct disruption.
Journal ArticleDOI
Low symptomatic premature stent occlusion of multiple plastic stents for benign biliary strictures: comparing standard and prolonged stent change intervals.
TL;DR: Multiple plastic biliary stents for benign nonhilar strictures were associated with a low rate of premature symptomatic stent occlusions at more than 6 months and a longer occlusion-free survival.
