In current times, after the rapid expansion and spread of the COVID-19 outbreak globally, people have experienced severe disruption to their daily lives. One idea to manage the outbreak is to enforce people wear a face mask in public places. Therefore, automated and efficient face detection methods are essential for such enforcement. In this paper, a face mask detection model for static and real time videos has been presented which classifies the images as "with mask" and "without mask". The model is trained and evaluated using the Kaggle data-set. The gathered data-set comprises approximately about 4,000 pictures and attained a performance accuracy rate of 98%. The proposed model is computationally efficient and precise as compared to DenseNet-121, MobileNet-V2, VGG-19, and Inception-V3. This work can be utilized as a digitized scanning tool in schools, hospitals, banks, and airports, and many other public or commercial locations.

A real time face mask detection system using convolutional neural network

The drones can be used to detect a group of people who are unmasked and do not maintain social distance. In this paper, a deep learning-enabled drone is designed for mask detection and social distance monitoring. A drone is one of the unmanned systems that can be automated. This system mainly focuses on Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) monitoring using Raspberry Pi 4. This drone automation system sends alerts to the people via speaker for maintaining the social distance. This system captures images and detects unmasked persons using faster regions with convolutional neural network (faster R-CNN) model. When the system detects unmasked persons, it sends their details to respective authorities and the nearest police station. The built model covers the majority of face detection using different benchmark datasets. OpenCV camera utilizes 24/7 service reports on a daily basis using Raspberry Pi 4 and a faster R-CNN algorithm.

Mask Detection and Social Distance Identification Using Internet of Things and Faster R-CNN Algorithm

Coronavirus disease 2019 has seriously affected the world. One major protective measure for individuals is to wear masks in public areas. Several regions applied a compulsory mask-wearing rule in public areas to prevent transmission of the virus. Few research studies have examined automatic face mask detection based on image analysis. In this paper, we propose a deep learning based single-shot light-weight face mask detector to meet the low computational requirements for embedded systems, as well as achieve high performance. To cope with the low feature extraction capability caused by the light-weight model, we propose two novel methods to enhance the model’s feature extraction process. First, to extract rich context information and focus on crucial face mask related regions, we propose a novel residual context attention module. Second, to learn more discriminating features for faces with and without masks, we introduce a novel auxiliary task using synthesized Gaussian heat map regression. Ablation studies show that these methods can considerably boost the feature extraction ability and thus increase the final detection performance. Comparison with other models shows that the proposed model achieves state-of-the-art results on two public datasets, the AIZOO and Moxa3K face mask datasets. In particular, compared with another light-weight you only look once version 3 tiny model, the mean average precision of our model is 1.7% higher on the AIZOO dataset, and 10.47% higher on the Moxa3K dataset. Therefore, the proposed model has a high potential to contribute to public health care and fight against the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

A Deep Learning Based Light-Weight Face Mask Detector With Residual Context Attention and Gaussian Heatmap to Fight Against COVID-19

The continuous COVID-19 upsurge and emerging variants present unprecedented challenges in many health systems. Many regulatory authorities have instituted the mandatory use of face masks especially in public places where massive contact of people is frequent and inevitable, particularly inside public transport facilities, sports arenas, shopping malls and workplaces. However, compliance and adherence to proper wearing of face masks have been difficult due to various reasons including diversified mask types, different degrees of obstructions, various variations, balancing various model detection accuracy or errors and deployment requirements, angle of view, deployment of detection model on computers with limited processing power, low-resolution images, facial expression, and lack of real-world dataset. Therefore, this study aimed at providing a comprehensive review of artificial intelligence models that have been used to detect face masks. The study revealed that deep learning models such as the Inceptionv3 convolutional neural network achieved 99.9% accuracy in detecting COVID-19 face masks. We deducted that most of the datasets used to detect face masks are created artificially, do not represent the real-world environments which ultimately affect the precision accuracy of the model when deployed in the real world. Hence there is a need for sharing real-world COVID-19 face mask images for modelling deep learning techniques. The study also revealed that deeper and wider deep learning architectures with increased training parameters, such as inception-v4, Mask R-CNN, Faster R-CNN, YOLOv3, Xception, and DenseNet are not yet implemented to detect face masks.

Application of Deep Learning and Machine Learning Models to Detect COVID-19 Face Masks - A Review

A large number of intelligent models for masked face recognition (MFR) has been recently presented and applied in various fields, such as masked face tracking for people safety or secure authentication. Exceptional hazards such as pandemics and frauds have noticeably accelerated the abundance of relevant algorithm creation and sharing, which has introduced new challenges. Therefore, recognizing and authenticating people wearing masks will be a long-established research area, and more efficient methods are needed for real-time MFR. Machine learning has made progress in MFR and has significantly facilitated the intelligent process of detecting and authenticating persons with occluded faces. This survey organizes and reviews the recent works developed for MFR based on deep learning techniques, providing insights and thorough discussion on the development pipeline of MFR systems. State-of-the-art techniques are introduced according to the characteristics of deep network architectures and deep feature extraction strategies. The common benchmarking datasets and evaluation metrics used in the field of MFR are also discussed. Many challenges and promising research directions are highlighted. This comprehensive study considers a wide variety of recent approaches and achievements, aiming to shape a global view of the field of MFR.

Masked Face Recognition Using Deep Learning: A Review

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread all over the world since it broke out massively in December 2019, which has caused a large loss to the whole world. Both the confirmed cases and death cases have reached a relatively frightening number. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the cause of COVID-19, can be transmitted by small respiratory droplets. To curb its spread at the source, wearing masks is a convenient and effective measure. In most cases, people use face masks in a high-frequent but short-time way. Aimed at solving the problem that we do not know which service stage of the mask belongs to, we propose a detection system based on the mobile phone. We first extract four features from the gray level co-occurrence matrixes (GLCMs) of the face mask’s micro-photos. Next, a three-result detection system is accomplished by using K Nearest Neighbor (KNN) algorithm. The results of validation experiments show that our system can reach an accuracy of 82.87% (measured by macro-measures) on the testing dataset. The precision of Type I ‘normal use’ and the recall of type III ‘not recommended’ reach 92.00% and 92.59%. In future work, we plan to expand the detection objects to more mask types. This work demonstrates that the proposed mobile microscope system can be used as an assistant for face mask being used, which may play a positive role in fighting against COVID-19.

Glaucoma is the collective term for a group of diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve. Retina nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness is an indicative reference for evaluating the progression of glaucoma. In this demo paper, we proposed an intelligent data extraction system for RNFL examination report, which can extract the RNFL thickness data from the report photo. The system consists of two procedures viz. target area segmentation and structure data extraction. This system can reduce the amount of data that needs to be entered manually, thus reducing the manual workload in electronic health records (EHRs) system.
