Abstract: The dc and ac conductivities of carbon nanotubes−polyepoxy composites have been investigated from 20 to 110 °C in the frequency range 10-2−106 Hz as a function of the conductive weight fraction p ranging from 0.04 to 2.5 wt %. The frequency dependence of the measured conductivity obeys the universal dynamic response (UDR): a dc plateau followed, above a critical frequency ωc, by the ωs power law with exponent s 0.6−1. The dc conductivity follows a percolation scaling law: σdc (p − pc)t with pc = 0.3 wt % and t = 1.4−1.8, according to the temperature. σdc reached 10-4 S/cm for 2.5 wt % CNTs content and increases with increasing temperature. Considering a biased random walk in three dimensions approach, we may explain the scaling law of ωc with p and its proportionality to σdc. The universality of ac conduction in carbon nanotubes−polymer composites is examined by the construction of master curves.

Abstract: We found that the palmitic acid allows an efficient dispersion of carbon nanotubes in the epoxy matrix. We have set up an experimental protocol in order to enhance the CNTs dispersion in epoxy resin. Electrical conductivity is optimal using a 1:1 CNTs to palmitic acid weight ratio. The associated percolation threshold is found between 0.05 and 0.1 wt % CNTs, i.e., between 0.03 and 0.06 vol %. The SEM image shows essentially individual CNTs which is inagreement with conductivity measurements. In comparison with composites without palmitic acid, the use of palmitic acid improves the electrical properties of CNTs-epoxy resin composites.

Abstract: Two multistep extractions were achieved on porcine aortic tissues to obtain acellular matrices used for cardiac bioprostheses. The evaluation of structural modifications and the possible damage of extracellular matrix fibrous proteins were investigated by means of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Protein-water interactions and degradation temperatures were determined by TGA. DSC was used to characterize protein thermal transitions (glass transition and denaturation), which provided information on the dynamic structure of the aortic tissue components. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) extraction had a destructuring effect, while Triton and cholate treatments did not affect the structural integrity of either elastin and collagen. A DSC comparison showed that SDS destabilizes the collagen triple helical domain and swells the elastin network.
