Effects of probiotic inclusion levels in broiler nutrition on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, plasma immunoglobulins, and cecal microflora composition

Two grazing experiments were undertaken to evaluate the effects of sulla (Hedysarum coronarium) which contains condensed tannins (CT) and lucerne (Medicago sativa), which does not contain CT, on the performance of parasitized and non-parasitized lambs. The work was carried out near Palmerston North, New Zealand in 1992 and 1993.Experiment 1 used lambs which were either genetically ‘conventional’ or ‘resistant’ to gastrointestinal nematodes and which had a naturally acquired heavy parasite burden (faecal egg count (FEC) 1300–2500 eggs per gram faeces (epg)). They were either drenched to remove all the parasites or remained undrenched when allocated to pure swards of either sulla or lucerne for the 28-day experimental period. Liveweight gains of drenched lambs were higher with sulla (mean 302 g/day) than with lucerne (mean 245 g/day; P < 0·02) and rates of gain were not reduced (P = 0·10) by genetic resistance to nematodes. Undrenched lambs had mean faecal egg counts of 1090–2220 epg after 28 days, with higher counts in lambs grazing lucerne than in those grazing sulla (P < 0·05). Lambs grazing lucerne also had a much lower average daily gain (ADG) (mean 50 g/day) than those grazing sulla (mean 206 g/day; P < 0·0001). Resistant lambs had reduced (P = 0·07) ADG in the sulla treatment only.In Expt 2, lambs with a relatively low worm burden (average FEC 250 epg) were either drenched to remove all worms or dosed with 20 000 Trichostrongylus colubriformis infective larvae and grazed on pure sulla or lucerne swards for 42 days. Drenched lambs had a similar liveweight gain (mean 190 g/day) and wool growth when grazing either sulla or lucerne. Undrenched lambs grazing sulla had a greater ADG (mean 129 g/day) than those grazing lucerne (mean −39 g/day; P < 0·0001) and a higher rate of wool growth from mid-side patches (P < 0·009) and larger wool fibre diameter (P < 0·05) than those grazing lucerne. Undrenched lambs grazing sulla had lower FECs (P < 0·05) on days 14, 21, 35 and 42 than those grazing lucerne and lower (P < 0·05) Trichostrongylus colubriformis worm burdens at slaughter. Undrenched lambs had less perineal faecal contamination when grazing sulla rather than lucerne. Parasite-induced anorexia was evident in the lambs grazing lucerne but not in those grazing sulla.These findings demonstrate that the performance of lambs infected with nematode parasites can vary substantially when given feeds of a similar chemical composition. The superior performance of lambs grazing sulla was probably caused by condensed tannins, which decrease protein degradation in the rumen and can increase post-ruminal protein availability.

Effects of source of protein and carbohydrate on ruminal fermentation and passage of nutrients to the small intestine of lactating cows.

Five trials investigated the feeding value of wet and dried corn distillers byproducts as a source of protein and energy for growing and finishing cattle and investigated the effect of heat damage on the feeding value of dried distillers byproducts. In a calf growth trial, no differences in rate of gain or protein efficiency were observed among calves fed wet distillers byproducts (wet distillers grains + thin stillage; WDB) or one of three composites of dried distillers grains + solubles (DDGS) having a low, medium, or high concentration of ADIN. A finishing trial compared the energy value of dry-rolled corn (DRC) with WDB or the three DDGS composites, fed at 40% of the diet DM replacing DRC. Cattle consuming WDB or DDGS gained faster ( P .lo). In a lamb finishing trial, the addition of 5 or 10% ethanol did not affect (P > .lo) daily gain, DMI, or feed efficiency. In two metabolism trials with steers, grain byproducts (wet distillers grains, dry distillers grains plus solubles, wet corn gluten feed, dry corn gluten feed, hominy feed) and DRC had similar effects on ruminal pH and total VFA. Feeding thin stillage or condensed solubles reduced (P < .lo) ruminal pH and tended to reduce acetate:propionate. Wet corn distillers byproducts, fed at 40% of the diet DM, contain more NE, than did DRC and drying WDB reduces its NE, content. Acid detergent insoluble N is a poor indicator of protein and energy value in distillers grains.

Wet corn distillers byproducts compared with dried corn distillers grains with solubles as a source of protein and energy for ruminants.

The goal of this study was to examine whether supplemental fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and (or) mannanoligosaccharides (MOS) influenced indices of gut health of dogs. Adult female dogs (n = 4) surgically fitted with ileal cannulas were fed a dry, extruded, kibble diet twice daily. At each feeding, the following treatments were administered: 1) Control (no FOS or MOS); 2) 1 g FOS; 3) 1 g MOS; or 4) 1 g FOS + 1 g MOS. Fecal, ileal and blood samples were collected during the last 4 d of each 14-d period to measure protein catabolite concentrations, microbial populations, immune characteristics and nutrient digestibilities. Treatment means were compared using preplanned orthogonal contrasts. Dogs supplemented with MOS had lower (P = 0.05) fecal total aerobes and tended to have greater (P = 0.13) Lactobacillus populations. Ileal immunoglobulin (Ig) A concentrations were greater (P = 0.05) in dogs supplemented with FOS + MOS vs. control. Lymphocytes (% of total white blood cells) were greater (P < 0.05) in dogs supplemented with MOS. Serum IgA concentrations also tended (P = 0.13) to be greater in dogs supplemented with MOS. Dogs supplemented with FOS and FOS + MOS had lower (P < 0.05) fecal total indole and phenol concentrations. Dogs supplemented with MOS tended to have lower ileal DM (P = 0.149) and OM (P = 0.146) digestibilities vs. control. Results of this study suggest that dietary supplementation of FOS and MOS may have beneficial effects on colonic health and immune status of dogs.

Supplemental Fructooligosaccharides and Mannanoligosaccharides Influence Immune Function, Ileal and Total Tract Nutrient Digestibilities, Microbial Populations and Concentrations of Protein Catabolites in the Large Bowel of Dogs

A rapid and accurate atomic absorption method for the determination of chromium in faeces samples from pasture experiments using chromic oxide ‘markers’ is described. Of the elements present after ashing and digesting the samples in a phosphoric acid—manganese sulphate—potassium bromate solution silicate, aluminium, calcium and magnesium were found to interfere in the determination. The effects of these interferences were overcome by the addition of calcium to the test solution and by the addition of silicate to the standards, which were prepared in ‘blank’ solutions.The sensitivities of a number of alternate chromium resonance lines relative to that of Cr 3578·7 A. are given. These lines may be used to increase the concentration range of the analysis.The results of a comparison of the atomic absorption method with a chemical method are given.

The determination of chromic oxide in faeces samples by atomic absorption spectrophotometry

Methods are proposed for the determination of cadmium in soils, plants and fertilizers. Soil is first dissolved by treatment with hydrofluoric and hydrochloric acids and plant material is digested with nitric‐perchloric‐sulphuric acids. The cadmium is then extracted from the resulting solutions as the dithizone complex. After destruction of the dithizone the cadmium is dissolved in dilute hydrochloric acid and determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Cadmium in phosphatic fertilizers is determined directly by atomic absorption measurement on hydrochloric acid digests of the fertilizer. The proposed methods have precision adequate for the study of cadmium in soil‐plant systems, the limits of detection being: plant material, 0.004 ppm Cd; soils, 0.02 ppm; and phosphatic fertilizers, 1 ppm.
