TL;DR: In this article, a half-life of 7.23hr was measured for compound nucleus reaction cross sections, and good agreement was obtained with the predictions of the Jackson model, and the ($d, n$) stripping cross sections are discussed briefly.
Abstract: Cross sections for the reactions ${\mathrm{Bi}}^{209}({\mathrm{He}}^{4}, 2n){\mathrm{At}}^{211}$, ${\mathrm{Bi}}^{209}({\mathrm{He}}^{4}, 3n){\mathrm{At}}^{210}$, and ${\mathrm{Bi}}^{209}({\mathrm{He}}^{4}, 4n){\mathrm{At}}^{209}$ were measured with helium ions of energies from 20.6 to 43.3 Mev. Cross sections for the reactions ${\mathrm{Bi}}^{209}(d, p)\mathrm{RaE}$, ${\mathrm{Bi}}^{209}(d, n){\mathrm{Po}}^{210}$, ${\mathrm{Bi}}^{209}(d, 2n){\mathrm{Po}}^{209}$, ${\mathrm{Bi}}^{209}(d, 3n){\mathrm{Po}}^{208}$, and ${\mathrm{Pb}}^{208}(d, p){\mathrm{Pb}}^{209}$ were measured with deuterons of energies from 6.3 to 21.5 Mev. Some information is presented on the ${\mathrm{Bi}}^{209}({\mathrm{He}}^{4}, t){\mathrm{Po}}^{210}$ reaction. A half-life of 7.23\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04 hr was measured for ${\mathrm{At}}^{211}$. The ${\mathrm{Bi}}^{209}(d, 3n){\mathrm{Po}}^{208}$ threshold energy is 12.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3 Mev (center-of-mass system). The compound nucleus reaction cross sections are compared with the predictions of the Jackson model, and good agreement is obtained. The ($d, n$) and ($d, p$) stripping cross sections are discussed briefly.

TL;DR: It is shown that 252Cf-PDMS is capable of producing mass spectra of quasi-molecular ions for a wide variety of compounds, including amino acids, moderately large peptides, nucleotides, and natural products.
Abstract: We have shown that 252Cf-PDMS is capable of producing mass spectra of quasi-molecular ions for a wide variety of compounds, including amino acids, moderately large peptides, nucleotides, and natural products. Positive and negative ion mass spectra can be obtained, and in many cases quasi-molecular ions are observed in both. The method is nondestructive, as only a relatively few molecules are used and samples can be recovered after the measurement is made. Fragmentation patterns are obtained which can yield structure information. The present sensitivity of the method is at the nanogram level and there are possibilities for reducing this to picograms. The mass resolution is sufficient to give elemental identification up to mass 500. This may be extended to higher masses with improved time-of-flight techniques. There are indications that 252Cf-PDMS may extend the mass range of molecules that can be studied to as high as 3000 or more.

Abstract: New hydrophobic, tridentate nitrogen heterocyclic reagents (BATPs) such as 2,6-bis(5,5,8,8-tetramethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrobenzo[1,2,4]triazin-3-yl) pyridine (1) and 2,6-bis(9,9,10,10-tetramethyl-9,10-dihydro-1,2,4-triaza-anthrane-3-yl) pyridine (2) have been studied. I is resistant to hydrolysis in 3 M nitric acid, whereas 2 is resistant to both acid hydrolysis and radiolysis. The molecules are able to give significantly enhanced separations of americium(III) from an excess of europium(III) in nitric acid. Typically, for 1 D-Am = 500 and SFAm,/Eu = 5000 compared with D-Am = 30 and SFAm /Eu = 400 with the reference molecule 2,6-bis(isopropyl[1,2,4]triazin-3-yl) pyridine (7). In order to increase the stability of 1 and 2, the labile alpha-benzylic hydrogens that are present in 7 have been replaced by alkyl groups. Three molecules of 1 are able to enclose completely the coordination sphere of the M(III) in the crystal structure of [Y(1)(3)][Y(NO3)(5)]center dot NO3 center dot 2.5H(2)O.
