Exploring the effect of image enhancement techniques on COVID-19 detection using chest X-ray images.

The use of computer-aided diagnosis in the reliable and fast detection of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has become a necessity to prevent the spread of the virus during the pandemic to ease the burden on the medical infrastructure. Chest X-ray (CXR) imaging has several advantages over other imaging techniques as it is cheap, easily accessible, fast and portable. This paper explores the effect of various popular image enhancement techniques and states the effect of each of them on the detection performance. We have compiled the largest X-ray dataset called COVQU-20, consisting of 18,479 normal, non-COVID lung opacity and COVID-19 CXR images. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest public COVID positive database. Ground glass opacity is the common symptom reported in COVID-19 pneumonia patients and so a mixture of 3616 COVID-19, 6012 non-COVID lung opacity, and 8851 normal chest X-ray images were used to create this dataset. Five different image enhancement techniques: histogram equalization, contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization, image complement, gamma correction, and Balance Contrast Enhancement Technique were used to improve COVID-19 detection accuracy. Six different Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) were investigated in this study. Gamma correction technique outperforms other enhancement techniques in detecting COVID-19 from standard and segmented lung CXR images. The accuracy, precision, sensitivity, f1-score, and specificity in the detection of COVID-19 with gamma correction on CXR images were 96.29%, 96.28%, 96.29%, 96.28% and 96.27% respectively. The accuracy, precision, sensitivity, F1-score, and specificity were 95.11 %, 94.55 %, 94.56 %, 94.53 % and 95.59 % respectively for segmented lung images. The proposed approach with very high and comparable performance will boost the fast and robust COVID-19 detection using chest X-ray images.

Exploring the Effect of Image Enhancement Techniques on COVID-19 Detection using Chest X-rays Images

This paper addresses the automatic detection of microaneurysms in color fundus images, which plays a key role in computer assisted diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy, a serious and frequent eye disease. The algorithm can be divided into four steps. The first step consists in image enhancement, shade correction and image normalization of the green channel. The second step aims at detecting candidates, i.e. all patterns possibly corresponding to MA, which is achieved by diameter closing and an automatic threshold scheme. Then, features are extracted, which are used in the last step to automatically classify candidates into real MA and other objects; the classification relies on kernel density estimation with variable bandwidth. A database of 21 annotated images has been used to train the algorithm. The algorithm was compared to manually obtained gradings of 94 images; sensitivity was 88.5% at an average number of 2.13 false positives per image.

Automatic detection of microaneurysms in color fundus images for screening of diabetic retinopathy.

Covid-19 is a rapidly spreading viral disease that infects not only humans, but animals are also infected because of this disease. The daily life of human beings, their health, and the economy of a country are affected due to this deadly viral disease. Covid-19 is a common spreading disease, and till now, not a single country can prepare a vaccine for COVID-19. A clinical study of COVID-19 infected patients has shown that these types of patients are mostly infected from a lung infection after coming in contact with this disease. Chest x-ray (i.e., radiography) and chest CT are a more effective imaging technique for diagnosing lunge related problems. Still, a substantial chest x-ray is a lower cost process in comparison to chest CT. Deep learning is the most successful technique of machine learning, which provides useful analysis to study a large amount of chest x-ray images that can critically impact on screening of Covid-19. In this work, we have taken the PA view of chest x-ray scans for covid-19 affected patients as well as healthy patients. After cleaning up the images and applying data augmentation, we have used deep learning-based CNN models and compared their performance. We have compared Inception V3, Xception, and ResNeXt models and examined their accuracy. To analyze the model performance, 6432 chest x-ray scans samples have been collected from the Kaggle repository, out of which 5467 were used for training and 965 for validation. In result analysis, the Xception model gives the highest accuracy (i.e., 97.97%) for detecting Chest X-rays images as compared to other models. This work only focuses on possible methods of classifying covid-19 infected patients and does not claim any medical accuracy.

Deep learning based detection and analysis of COVID-19 on chest X-ray images

Convolutional neural network based Alzheimer’s disease classification from magnetic resonance brain images

The objective of this study is to propose an alternative, hybrid solution method for diagnosing diabetic retinopathy from retinal fundus images. In detail, the hybrid method is based on using both image processing and deep learning for improved results. In medical image processing, reliable diabetic retinopathy detection from digital fundus images is known as an open problem and needs alternative solutions to be developed. In this context, manual interpretation of retinal fundus images requires the magnitude of work, expertise, and over-processing time. So, doctors need support from imaging and computer vision systems and the next step is widely associated with use of intelligent diagnosis systems. The solution method proposed in this study includes employment of image processing with histogram equalization, and the contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization techniques. Next, the diagnosis is performed by the classification of a convolutional neural network. The method was validated using 400 retinal fundus images within the MESSIDOR database, and average values for different performance evaluation parameters were obtained as accuracy 97%, sensitivity (recall) 94%, specificity 98%, precision 94%, FScore 94%, and GMean 95%. In addition to those results, a general comparison of with some previously carried out studies has also shown that the introduced method is efficient and successful enough at diagnosing diabetic retinopathy from retinal fundus images. By employing the related image processing techniques and deep learning for diagnosing diabetic retinopathy, the proposed method and the research results are valuable contributions to the associated literature.
