Using detailed survey data from Uganda, this article examines whether coffee producers sell to itinerant traders or directly to markets, where they can get a higher price but must incur a transport cost. We find that selling to the market is more likely when the quantity sold is large and the market is close by. Wealthy farmers are less likely to sell to the market, possibly because the shadow value of their time is higher. But if they have a large quantity of coffee for sale, they are more likely to sell it to the market. They are also more likely to travel to a distant market. These findings are consistent with their better ability to pay for public transportation. We find no evidence that the decision to sell at the farmgate is driven by a self-control motive.

Student enrolments in primary and secondary schools increased from 0.9 and 0.03 million in 1963 to 7.1 and 0.9 million in 2003, respectively. The number of primary and secondary schools also increased from 6,058 and 150 in 1963 to about 19,496 and 3,999 in 2003, respectively. The number of schools may, however, understate the extent of expansion in the education system since within the existing schools, expansion was in form of increased number of classes. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyse factors that influence access to secondary education, and strategies for improving access to secondary education in Kenya.Design/methodology/approach – A logit model estimated using the Welfare Monitoring Household Survey while a simulation model is used to evaluate some of the strategies for improving access to secondary school education.Findings – The main determinants of access to secondary school education at household level include household's income, education level of household head, household residence, sex of child, availability of schools, and age of student.Research limitations/implications – Factor such as property ownership by household and indirect costs to schooling not adequately captured due to non‐responses.Practical implications – Strategies for expanding secondary school education include: expansion of infrastructure through strong partnerships, enhancing efficiency in use of human and financial resources, developing sustainable poverty...

Improving access to secondary education in Kenya: what can be done?

Since the 1980s, Kenya has been gradually integrating with the global economy. Using both industry-level and firm-level data, the paper examines the effects of globalization on employment and earnings in the Kenyan manufacturing sector. The industry-level analysis suggests that the overall effect of international trade on manufacturing employment has been negative in the 1990s. The firm-level analysis indicates that less skilled workers experienced losses in earnings, and that the inequality in earnings between skilled and unskilled workers increased during this period.
