Detection of 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) by real-time RT-PCR.
Victor M. Corman,Olfert Landt,Marco Kaiser,Richard Molenkamp,Adam Meijer,Daniel K.W. Chu,Tobias Bleicker,Sebastian Brünink,Julia Schneider,Marie Luisa Schmidt,Daphne G.J.C. Mulders,Bart L. Haagmans,Bas van der Veer,Sharon van den Brink,Lisa Wijsman,Gabriel Goderski,Jean Louis Romette,Joanna Ellis,Maria Zambon,Malik Peiris,Herman Goossens,Chantal B.E.M. Reusken,Marion Koopmans,Christian Drosten +23 more
TL;DR: A validated diagnostic workflow for 2019-nCoV is presented, its design relying on close genetic relatedness of 2019- nCoV with SARS coronavirus, making use of synthetic nucleic acid technology.
Journal ArticleDOI
Respiratory virus shedding in exhaled breath and efficacy of face masks.
Nancy H. L. Leung,Daniel K.W. Chu,Eunice Y.C. Shiu,Kwok-Hung Chan,James J. McDevitt,Benien J.P. Hau,Benien J.P. Hau,Hui-Ling Yen,Yuguo Li,Dennis K. M. Ip,J. S. Malik Peiris,WH Seto,WH Seto,Gabriel M. Leung,Donald K. Milton,Benjamin J. Cowling +15 more
TL;DR: A study of 246 individuals with seasonal respiratory virus infections randomized to wear or not wear a surgical face mask showed that masks can significantly reduce detection of coronavirus and influenza virus in exhaled breath and may help interrupt virus transmission.
Journal ArticleDOI
Molecular Diagnosis of a Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) Causing an Outbreak of Pneumonia.
Daniel K.W. Chu,Yang Pan,Yang Pan,Samuel M.S. Cheng,Kenrie P Y Hui,Pavithra Krishnan,Yingzhi Liu,Daisy Y M Ng,Carrie K C Wan,Peng Yang,Peng Yang,Quanyi Wang,Malik Peiris,Leo L.M. Poon +13 more
TL;DR: Two 1-step quantitative real-time reverse-transcription PCR assays can achieve a rapid detection of 2019n-CoV in human samples, thereby allowing early identification of patients.
Journal ArticleDOI
Infection of dogs with SARS-CoV-2.
Thomas H. C. Sit,Christopher J. Brackman,Sin Ming Ip,Karina W. S. Tam,Pierra Y. T. Law,Esther M. W. To,Veronica Y. T. Yu,Leslie D. Sims,Dominic N.C. Tsang,Daniel K.W. Chu,Ranawaka A.P.M. Perera,Leo L.M. Poon,Malik Peiris +12 more
TL;DR: The evidence suggests that two out of 15 dogs from households with confirmed human cases of COVID-19 in Hong Kong were asymptomatically infected with SARS-CoV-2 and showed antibody responses to the virus.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identification of a Novel Coronavirus in Bats
Leo L.M. Poon,Daniel K.W. Chu,Kwok-Hung Chan,O. K. Wong,Trevor M. Ellis,Y. H. C. Leung,Susanna K. P. Lau,Patrick C. Y. Woo,K. Y. Suen,Kwok-Yung Yuen,Yi Guan,Joseph S. M. Peiris +11 more
TL;DR: The identification of a novel bat coronavirus is reported through surveillance of coronaviruses in wildlife, andalyses of the RNA sequence from the ORF1b and S-gene regions indicated that the virus is a group 1 coronav virus.
