The global tree restoration potential.
Jean-François Bastin,Yelena Finegold,Claude Garcia,Danilo Mollicone,Marcelo Rezende,Devin Routh,Constantin M. Zohner,Thomas W. Crowther +7 more
TL;DR: There is room for an extra 0.9 billion hectares of canopy cover, which could store 205 gigatonnes of carbon in areas that would naturally support woodlands and forests, which highlights global tree restoration as one of the most effective carbon drawdown solutions to date.
Journal ArticleDOI
The extent of forest in dryland biomes
Jean-François Bastin,Jean-François Bastin,Nora Berrahmouni,Alan Grainger,Danae Maniatis,Danae Maniatis,Danilo Mollicone,Rebecca Moore,Chiara Patriarca,Nicolas Picard,Ben Sparrow,Elena Maria Abraham,Kamel Aloui,Ayhan Ateşoğlu,Fabio Attore,Çağlar Bassüllü,Adia Bey,Monica Garzuglia,Luis G. García-Montero,Nikée Groot,Greg R. Guerin,Lars Laestadius,Andrew J. Lowe,Bako Mamane,Giulio Marchi,Paul L. Patterson,Marcelo Rezende,Stefano Ricci,Ignacio Salcedo,Alfonso Sanchez-Paus Díaz,Fred Stolle,Venera Surappaeva,Rene Castro +32 more
TL;DR: An estimate of global forest extent in dryland biomes is reported, based on analyzing more than 210,000 0.5-hectare sample plots through a photo-interpretation approach using large databases of satellite imagery at very high spatial resolution and very high temporal resolution, available through the Google Earth platform.
Journal ArticleDOI
Collect Earth: Land Use and Land Cover Assessment through Augmented Visual Interpretation
Adia Bey,Alfonso Sanchez-Paus Díaz,Danae Maniatis,Giulio Marchi,Danilo Mollicone,Stefano Ricci,Jean-François Bastin,Rebecca Moore,Sandro Federici,Marcelo Rezende,Chiara Patriarca,Ruth Turia,Gewa Gamoga,Hitofumi Abe,Elizabeth Kaidong,Gino Miceli +15 more
TL;DR: This study provides a full overview of Collect Earth’s structure and functionality, and presents the methodology used to undertake land monitoring through augmented visual interpretation, and an example of land monitoring in Papua New Guinea is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ecology: human role in Russian wild fires.
TL;DR: Examination of forest-fire events across the boreal Russian Federation for the period 2002 to 2005 shows that there were more fires in years during which the weather was anomalous, but that more than 87% of fires in boreal Russia were started by people.
Journal ArticleDOI
Applying the conservativeness principle to REDD to deal with the uncertainties of the estimates
TL;DR: In this article, a series of concepts and methodological tools are proposed to deal with the uncertainties of the estimates of reduced emissions from deforestation in the context of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
