Journal ArticleDOI
Hereditary pancreatitis is caused by a mutation in the cationic trypsinogen gene.
David C. Whitcomb,Michael C. Gorry,Preston Ra,William Furey,Michael Sossenheimer,Charles D. Ulrich,Stephen P. Martin,Lawrence K. Gates,Stephen T. Amann,Phillip P. Toskes,Roger A. Liddle,Kevin McGrath,Generoso Uomo,James Christopher Post,James Christopher Post,Garth D. Ehrlich +15 more
TL;DR: X-ray crystal structure analysis, molecular modelling, and protein digest data indicate that the Arg 117 residue is a trypsin-sensitive site, and that loss of this cleavage site would permit autodigestion resulting in pancreatitis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Chronic pancreatitis: Diagnosis, classification, and new genetic developments
Babak Etemad,David C. Whitcomb +1 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that an adequate pancreatic biopsy must be the gold standard against which all diagnostic approaches are judged and the roles of endoscopic retrograde pancreatography, endoscopic ultrasonography, and magnetic resonance imaging are considered.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hereditary Pancreatitis and the Risk of Pancreatic Cancer
Albert B. Lowenfels,Patrick Maisonneuve,Eugene P. DiMagno,Yoram Elitsur,Lawrence K. Gates,Jean Perrault,David C. Whitcomb +6 more
TL;DR: The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of pancreatic cancer and other tumors in patients with hereditary form of pancreatitis and to determine the natural history of hereditary pancreatitis.
Journal ArticleDOI
IAP Guidelines for the Surgical Management of Acute Pancreatitis
Waldemar Uhl,Andrew L. Warshaw,Clement W. Imrie,Claudio Bassi,Colin J. McKay,Paul Georg Lankisch,Ross Carter,Eugene Di Magno,Peter A. Banks,David C. Whitcomb,Christos Dervenis,Charles D. Ulrich,Kat Satake,Paula Ghaneh,Werner Hartwig,Jens Werner,Gerry McEntee,John P. Neoptolemos,Markus W. Büchler +18 more
TL;DR: During 2002 the International Association of Pancreatology developed evidenced-based guidelines on the surgical management of acute pancreatitis, which should form the basis for audit studies in order to determine the quality of patient care delivery.
