TL;DR: In this article, the effects of cooperative, individualistic and laissez faire goal structures were compared on interpersonal interaction and attraction between non-handicapped junior high school students and high trainable mentally retarded peers participating in six weekly sessions of a bowling class.
Abstract: The effects of cooperative, individualistic, and laissez faire goal structures were compared on interpersonal interaction and attraction between nonhandicapped junior high school students and high trainable mentally retarded peers participating in six weekly sessions of a bowling class. The results indicate that considerably more positive interactions took place between the nonhandicapped and the handicapped students in the cooperative condition than in the individualistic or laissez faire conditions.

TL;DR: Learning-disabled Ss in the cooperative condition learned more swimming skills than did their counterparts in the individual condition, and more friendly interactions in the postinstructional, free-swim periods occurred in the cooperatively structured pairs.
Abstract: Summary The effects of cooperative and individual learning experiences on friendly and hostile interaction between normal-progress and learning-disabled children in free-choice, postinstructional situations were studied. Twelve second and third grade elementary school boys participated in a study utilizing swimming classes. Three normal-progress and three learning-disabled Ss were assigned to each condition. Ss participated in a nine-day swimming course, learning swimming skills either individually or in cooperatively structured pairs. The results indicate that more friendly interactions in the postinstructional, free-swim periods occurred in the cooperative compared to the individual condition. More hostile interactions occurred in the individual condition. Learning-disabled Ss were ignored by their normal-progress peers more in the individual condition. Learning-disabled Ss in the cooperative condition learned more swimming skills than did their counterparts in the individual condition.

TL;DR: The development of a new derivative, the dimethylaminoethyl ester, for the analysis of fatty acids by electrospray tandem mass spectrometry has good potential as a screening method for biologically important fatty acids.
Abstract: The development of a new derivative, the dimethylaminoethyl ester, for the analysis of fatty acids by electrospray tandem mass spectrometry is described. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of long to very long chain fatty acids in plasma, blood, urine and wax were performed. Branched chain, unsaturated, dicarboxylic, hydroxy, amino and keto acids were studied. The quantitative analysis method using the new derivative is simple, rapid and precise with small sample size. It has good potential as a screening method for biologically important fatty acids. Copyright 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

TL;DR: The TFTR Thomson scattering system has been operational since January 1984 as discussed by the authors and uses two ruby lasers and two spectrometer-detector systems to provide profiles at two times in a discharge.
Abstract: The TFTR Thomson scattering system has been operational since January 1984. The diagnostic uses two ruby lasers and two spectrometer‐detector systems to provide profiles at two times in a discharge. The two scattering lines consist of 76 spatial channels which span the 200‐cm vacuum vessel along a major radius. The detectors are gated, intensified CCD arrays with single photoelectron sensitivity. Te(R) and Ne(R) profiles are presented.

TL;DR: The effects of individual and group contingencies were studied on achievement, appropriate classroom behavior, acceptance of handicapped peers, and self-esteem of academically and socially handicapped students.
Abstract: Summary The effects of individual and group contingencies were studied on achievement, appropriate classroom behavior, acceptance of handicapped peers, and self-esteem of academically and socially handicapped students. Four studies are reported, focusing on the following: four first-graders, 11 seventh-graders, five ninth-graders, and five first-graders. All were low-achieving, special needs students, many of whom were seeing special education teachers due to their disruptive classroom behavior and alienation of their peers. In all studies, group-contingency procedures were compared to individual-contingency procedures or no-contingency procedures. Different operationalizations of group-contingency procedures were used in each study. The studies were conducted in different school districts at different times of the year. Variations of A-B-A designs were used in the studies. The results are consistent, indicating that group contingencies (compared with individual contingencies or no contingencies at all) p...

TL;DR: The results of an international collaboration to produce and make freely available a draft sequence of the human genome are reported and an initial analysis is presented, describing some of the insights that can be gleaned from the sequence.
Abstract: The human genome holds an extraordinary trove of information about human development, physiology, medicine and evolution. Here we report the results of an international collaboration to produce and make freely available a draft sequence of the human genome. We also present an initial analysis of the data, describing some of the insights that can be gleaned from the sequence.

TL;DR: A theory of intergroup conflict and some preliminary data relating to the theory is presented in this article. But the analysis is limited to the case where the salient dimensions of the intergroup differentiation are those involving scarce resources.
Abstract: This chapter presents an outline of a theory of intergroup conflict and some preliminary data relating to the theory. Much of the work on the social psychology of intergroup relations has focused on patterns of individual prejudices and discrimination and on the motivational sequences of interpersonal interaction. The intensity of explicit intergroup conflicts of interests is closely related in human cultures to the degree of opprobrium attached to the notion of "renegade" or "traitor." The basic and highly reliable finding is that the trivial, ad hoc intergroup categorization leads to in-group favoritism and discrimination against the out-group. Many orthodox definitions of "social groups" are unduly restrictive when applied to the context of intergroup relations. The equation of social competition and intergroup conflict rests on the assumptions concerning an "ideal type" of social stratification in which the salient dimensions of intergroup differentiation are those involving scarce resources.
