TL;DR: The theory underlying the creation of a cooperative context is social interdependence theory as mentioned in this paper, which is the combination of cooperative experiences, constructive conflict resolution, and civic values that most effectively ensures that all relevant parties can redress past wrongs and reconcile with each other.
Abstract: To ensure that restorative justice is effective, a cooperative context must be developed, future conflicts must be managed constructively, and relevant parties need to adopt civic values. The theory underlying the creation of a cooperative context is social interdependence theory. Goal interdependence may be positive (i.e., cooperative) or negative (i.e., competitive). Creating a cooperative context will both help prevent destructively managed conflicts and help create positive relationships. The long-term maintenance of a cooperative context depends on resolving conflicts constructively. Individuals need to learn how to resolve conflicts of interests through integrative negotiation and peer mediation. Individuals also need to learn how to resolve intellectual disagreements through the constructive controversy procedure. Intellectual disagreements are inherent in all decision making. Finally, engaging in cooperative efforts and resolving conflicts constructively inculcates civic values. It is the combination of cooperative experiences, constructive conflict resolution, and civic values that most effectively ensures that all relevant parties can redress past wrongs and reconcile with each other.

TL;DR: Blood spots collected from four peroxisomal patients between 2 and 10 days after birth and stored for up to 17 years, were shown to give between 33% and 233% higher C26:0/C22:0 ratios compared to age-matched controls.
Abstract: A rapid method with potential to screen for many of the peroxisomal disorders using 5 microl of plasma or a 3-mm blood spot (3.6 microl blood impregnated on filter paper) is described. Fatty acids are liberated from plasma or blood spots and converted to dimethylaminoethyl esters. Trideuterated fatty acids, added as internal standards, are used to quantify eicosanoic (C20:0), docosanoic (C22:0), tetracosanoic (C24:0) and hexacosanoic (C26:0) acids by electrospray tandem mass spectrometry. The C26:0/C22:0 and C24:0/C22:0 ratios are significantly greater in the plasma of patients with peroxisomal disorders compared to controls. The C20:0/C22:0 ratio is elevated in the plasma of peroxisomal patients who accumulate phytanic acid. Blood spots collected from four peroxisomal patients between 2 and 10 days after birth and stored for up to 17 years, were shown to give between 33% and 233% higher C26:0/C22:0 ratios compared to age-matched controls.

TL;DR: Implementation of the Low Risk Ankle Rule in several different emergency department settings reduced the rate of pediatric ankle radiography significantly and safely, without an accompanying change in physician or patient satisfaction.
Abstract: Background: The Low Risk Ankle Rule is a validated clinical decision rule that has the potential to safely reduce radiography in children with acute ankle injuries. We performed a phased implementation of the Low Risk Ankle Rule and evaluated its effectiveness in reducing the frequency of radiography in children with ankle injuries. Methods: Six Canadian emergency departments participated in the study from Jan. 1, 2009, to Aug. 31, 2011. At the 3 intervention sites, there were 3 consecutive 26-week phases. In phase 1, no interventions were implemented. In phase 2, we activated strategies to implement the ankle rule, including physician education, reminders and a computerized decision support system. In phase 3, we included only the decision support system. No interventions were introduced at the 3 pair-matched control sites. We examined the management of ankle injuries among children aged 3–16 years. The primary outcome was the proportion of children undergoing radiography. Results: We enrolled 2151 children with ankle injuries, 1055 at intervention and 1096 at control hospitals. During phase 1, the baseline frequency of pediatric ankle radiography at intervention and control sites was 96.5% and 90.2%, respectively. During phase 2, the frequency of ankle radiography decreased significantly at intervention sites relative to control sites (between-group difference −21.9% [95% confidence interval [CI] −28.6% to −15.2%]), without significant differences in patient or physician satisfaction. All effects were sustained in phase 3. The sensitivity of the Low Risk Ankle Rule during implementation was 100% (95% CI 85.4% to 100%), and the specificity was 53.1% (95% CI 48.1% to 58.1%). Interpretation: Implementation of the Low Risk Ankle Rule in several different emergency department settings reduced the rate of pediatric ankle radiography significantly and safely, without an accompanying change in physician or patient satisfaction. TL;DR: In this paper, a new spectroscopic diagnostic was developed to measure poloidal velocity profiles of Tokamak fusion test reactor (TFTR) plasmas using the Doppler shift of the C VI 5291 A impurity line of both intrinsic emission and charge exchange emission from neutral beams.
Abstract: A new spectroscopic diagnostic was developed to measure poloidal velocity profiles of Tokamak fusion test reactor (TFTR) plasmas. Carbon poloidal velocities were measured using the Doppler shift of the C VI 5291 A impurity line of both intrinsic emission and charge exchange emission from neutral beams. Poloidal velocities are typically small (vθ⩽104 m/s) requiring small wavelength shifts (Δλ⩽0.2 A) to be measured. However, the high central ion temperatures in TFTR required the use of a low dispersion spectrometer to view the entire linewidth (full width at half maximum ⩽25 A). A very high throughput spectrometer/detector system was assembled to achieve the necessary precision in vθ. Statistical errors in the chord-averaged poloidal velocity less than 100 m/s have been obtained. The short focal length spectrometer features f/1.8 input optics, a transmission grating, and refractive optics. A thinned back-illuminated charge coupled device detector provided a high quantum efficiency (QE=75%). The diagnostic h...

Abstract: The human genome holds an extraordinary trove of information about human development, physiology, medicine and evolution. Here we report the results of an international collaboration to produce and make freely available a draft sequence of the human genome. We also present an initial analysis of the data, describing some of the insights that can be gleaned from the sequence.

TL;DR: A theory of intergroup conflict and some preliminary data relating to the theory is presented in this article. But the analysis is limited to the case where the salient dimensions of the intergroup differentiation are those involving scarce resources.
Abstract: This chapter presents an outline of a theory of intergroup conflict and some preliminary data relating to the theory. Much of the work on the social psychology of intergroup relations has focused on patterns of individual prejudices and discrimination and on the motivational sequences of interpersonal interaction. The intensity of explicit intergroup conflicts of interests is closely related in human cultures to the degree of opprobrium attached to the notion of "renegade" or "traitor." The basic and highly reliable finding is that the trivial, ad hoc intergroup categorization leads to in-group favoritism and discrimination against the out-group. Many orthodox definitions of "social groups" are unduly restrictive when applied to the context of intergroup relations. The equation of social competition and intergroup conflict rests on the assumptions concerning an "ideal type" of social stratification in which the salient dimensions of intergroup differentiation are those involving scarce resources.
