Abstract: University teaching has not changed significantly for hundreds and perhaps thousands of years. The many attempts to reform university teaching have often demonstrated positive effects but have then been discontinued. One explanation for the resistance of teaching to change is that instructors fail to apply the same scientific rigor to their teaching as they do to their research. Professors as scientists and intellectuals typically ask for proof when a colleague presents a scientific conclusion, yet when it comes to what constitutes good teaching, professors often accept uncontested folklore and mythology. Many of the recommendations made about teaching, furthermore, are based more on stories and promising ideas rather than conclusions from rigorous research. What is lacking is the successful application of theory and research to instructional methods. This article presents cooperative learning as one example of theory validated by research applied to instructional practice.

Abstract: It was recently reported that misoriented layered WSe2 and (W)x(WSe2)y films possess extremely low cross-plane thermal conductivity. Here, we report that the in-plane thermal conductivity results for WSe2 and W4(WSe2)10 films measured by using a suspended device are about 30 times higher than the cross-plane values because of the in-plane ordered and cross-plane disordered structures and about six times lower than that of compacted single-crystal WSe2 platelets. The additional W layers in the W4(WSe2)10 films were found to greatly increase the in-plane electrical conductivity relative to the WSe2 films, but reduce the in-plane lattice thermal conductivity assuming the Wiedemann-Franz law.

Abstract: Pure red cell aplasia in patients who are treated for anemia of chronic kidney disease with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents such as epoetin was first reported in 1998. Although the incidence of pure red cell aplasia peaked in 2002, it remains important for nephrologists to know how to investigate a suspected case of pure red cell aplasia and how to identify other causes of hyporesponsiveness to erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, which account for the vast majority of such cases. The authors reviewed the current status of information in the literature and drew on their personal experiences with patients regarding the diagnosis and management of epoetin-induced pure red cell aplasia. The mechanism for development of epoetin-induced pure red cell aplasia remains unconfirmed. It generally occurs after the production of neutralizing anti-erythropoietin antibodies. Elucidation of a suspected pure red cell aplasia case requires a systematic approach, beginning with simple measurements such as blood cell counts, because most cases of erythropoiesis-stimulating agent hyporesponsiveness are attributable to other causes. If these criteria indicate that the patient's response to erythropoiesis-stimulating agent therapy is very poor, then bone marrow examination and measurement of anti-erythropoietin antibodies is justified. If pure red cell aplasia is confirmed, then cessation of erythropoiesis-stimulating agent therapy and initiation of immunosuppressive therapy are recommended. Continued study of epoetin-induced pure red cell aplasia is needed to help nephrologists prevent or manage future cases and will have implications for the use of other protein-based therapeutic agents.

Abstract: Background and objectives Technique failure is a major limitation of peritoneal dialysis. Our study aimed to identify center- and patient-level predictors of peritoneal dialysis technique failure. Design, setting, participants, & measurements All patients on incident peritoneal dialysis in Australia from 2004 to 2014 were included in the study using data from the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry. Center- and patient-level characteristics associated with technique failure were evaluated using Cox shared frailty models. Death-censored technique failure and cause-specific technique failure were analyzed as secondary outcomes. Results The study included 9362 patients from 51 centers in Australia. The technique failure rate was 0.35 (95% confidence interval, 0.34 to 0.36) episodes per patient-year, with a sevenfold variation across centers that was mainly associated with center-level characteristics. Technique failure was significantly less likely in centers with larger proportions of patients treated with peritoneal dialysis (>29%; adjusted hazard ratio, 0.83; 95% confidence interval, 0.73 to 0.94) and more likely in smaller centers ( Conclusions Technique failure varies widely across centers in Australia. A significant proportion of this variation is related to potentially modifiable center characteristics, including peritoneal dialysis center size, proportion of patients on peritoneal dialysis, and proportion of patients on peritoneal dialysis achieving target phosphate level.

Abstract: This chapter presents an outline of a theory of intergroup conflict and some preliminary data relating to the theory. Much of the work on the social psychology of intergroup relations has focused on patterns of individual prejudices and discrimination and on the motivational sequences of interpersonal interaction. The intensity of explicit intergroup conflicts of interests is closely related in human cultures to the degree of opprobrium attached to the notion of "renegade" or "traitor." The basic and highly reliable finding is that the trivial, ad hoc intergroup categorization leads to in-group favoritism and discrimination against the out-group. Many orthodox definitions of "social groups" are unduly restrictive when applied to the context of intergroup relations. The equation of social competition and intergroup conflict rests on the assumptions concerning an "ideal type" of social stratification in which the salient dimensions of intergroup differentiation are those involving scarce resources.
