High-frequency oscillation in adults: a utilization review.
Neill K. J. Adhikari,Abdel Bashir,Francois Lamontagne,Sangeeta Mehta,Niall D. Ferguson,Qi Zhou,Lori Hand,Kasia Czarnecka,Deborah J. Cook,John Granton,Jan O. Friedrich,Andreas Freitag,Irene Watpool,Maureen O. Meade +13 more
TL;DR: Most patients treated with high- frequencies oscillation have acute respiratory distress syndrome and severe hypoxemia that modestly improves 2 hrs after high-frequency oscillation application, however, oxygenation worsens in some patients, complications are common, and mortality is high.
Journal ArticleDOI
Premature Discontinuation of Randomized Trials in Critical and Emergency Care: A Retrospective Cohort Study.
Stefan Schandelmaier,Erik von Elm,John J. You,Anette Blümle,Yuki Tomonaga,Francois Lamontagne,Ramon Saccilotto,Alain Amstutz,Theresa Bengough,Joerg J Meerpohl,Mihaela Stegert,Kelechi K Olu,Kari A.O. Johnston,Martin A. Walter,Bernard Burnand,Matthias Schwenkglenks,Lars G. Hemkens,Deborah J. Cook,Maureen O. Meade,Heiner C. Bucher,Benjamin Kasenda,Matthias Briel,Matthias Briel +49 more
TL;DR: The results highlight the need for strategies to reliably prevent and resolve slow patient recruitment in randomized clinical trials conducted in the critical and emergency care setting and have an approximately four-fold higher risk of discontinuation due to slow recruitment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Clonidine in the sedation of mechanically ventilated children: a pilot randomized trial.
Mark Duffett,Karen Choong,Jennifer Foster,Ji Cheng,Maureen O. Meade,Kusum Menon,Deborah J. Cook +6 more
TL;DR: This pilot trial demonstrated feasibility of a larger randomized controlled trial, and recommends that future trials capitalize on the experience gained and use these results to design a larger trial focusing on clinically important outcomes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Influencing advance directive completion rates in nonterminally ill patients: a systematic review.
TL;DR: A priori documentation and subsequent availability of ADs at the point of care increases the probability that diagnostic, therapeutic and palliative interventions will be administered to patients within the framework of these preferences.
