Perception and determinants of agricultural technology adoption in North Shoa Zone, Amhara Regional State, Ethiopia

This study examines the factors affecting the adoption of high-yield wheat varieties by wheat farmers in Sindh, Pakistan A cross-sectional data of randomly selected 240 wheat farmers from Shaheed Benazirabad and Naushahro Feroze districts in the middle region of Sindh, Pakistan were collected for this study We performed the probit model to estimate factors that influence the adoption of improved wheat varieties The results drawn from the estimations show that the adoption of improved wheat varieties by farmers in the study area was positively and significantly influenced by education, farming experience, landholding size, tube-well ownership, extension contact and access to credit The study recommends that public and private sectors should encourage access to extension service to improve of dissemination of certified seed of wheat crop among the growers through trainings, workshops and seminars

Factors influencing the adoption of improved wheat varieties by rural households in Sindh, Pakistan

Determinants of Farmers' Access to Market

Coffee production in the form of agroforestry practices is the most important management approach to improve the livelihoods of the farming community. This study was conducted to assess factors affecting the adoption of the technology, its socioeconomic and environmental benefits, and the management practices related to the technology. Out of eight kebeles in the district, two kebeles were selected purposively based on the existing and extensive agroforestry practices. Four villages were selected randomly. Based on the preidentified criteria as coffee growers and nongrowers, coffee growers were selected purposively. Then a total of 120 households were selected by Simple Random Sampling Method. Data were collected by using structured interview and field observation. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics analysis. The logit model was used to identify the factors affecting the adoption of coffee shade agroforestry technology. The results of this study showed that adoption of coffee shade agroforestry technology had a positive relationship and was statistically significant at 1% level with age and area covered by coffee production, while household composition and training were at 5% level. Education level, land holding, and extension services also had positive relationship, but it was not statistically significant. The farmers in the study area mentioned other benefits of these technologies such as for animal feed, firewood and construction materials, medicinal purpose, erosion control, honey bee production, and soil fertility enhancement. Different management activities were also identified in the area (such as composting, pruning, watering, and weeding). Coffee shade agroforestry technology was important to diversify the agricultural products, to solve the problem of livelihood, and adds economic and environmental benefits.

Adoption of Coffee Shade Agroforestry Technology and Shade Tree Management in Gobu Seyo District, East Wollega, Oromia

A study was conducted to analyze factors influencing adoption of wheat technology packages by smallholder farmers in Gurawa, Meta and Habro districts in eastern Ethiopia. The analysis was based on a household survey data collected from 136 randomly selected households. A Two-limit Tobit model was used to elucidate factors affecting adoption of technology packages measured based on an index derived from five components of wheat technologies which included row planting, pesticide application, use of improved varieties, and application of inorganic fertilizers, namely, Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) and Urea. Among the variables included in the model, variation in district, gender, age of the household head, education status of the household head, farm size, distance to market, distance to FTC (Farmers’ Training Centers), cooperative membership, dependency ratio, and annual income of the households were found to significantly affect the adoption of wheat technology packages. Policy makers, planners and development practitioners should give due attention to these determinants to support smallholder farmers in wheat production and enhance gains derived from it.

Determinants of Adoption of Wheat Production Technology Package by Smallholder Farmers: Evidences from Eastern Ethiopia

Potato production plays an important role in improving household income and nutrition and thereby contributes to food security. Despite of this, the current productivity of the crop is below the potential. Low level of use of improved potato technology package is among the causes for low productivity. In this context, this study analysed the factors influencing adoption of potato technology package by smallholder farmers in Gurawa, Haramaya, Kombolcha, Meta, and Habro districts of Eastern Ethiopia. The analysis was based on a household survey conducted on 214 randomly selected potato growing households. A two-limit Tobit model was used to analyse the factors affecting adoption which is measured in an index computed from five components of the technology package. Variation in districts, access to irrigation, farm size, membership to cooperatives, and annual income of the households were found to significantly affect the adoption of potato technology package. Policy makers, planners and development practitioners are required to give due attention to these determinants in order to support smallholder farmers in production and productivity improvements from potato production.

Determinants of adoption of potato production technology package by smallholder farmers: evidences from eastern ethiopia

Evidences suggested that use levels of inorganic fertilizers in potato production in Ethiopia are below the recommended rates. This study is aimed at accessing factors contributing to this. The study utilized data collected from 171 randomly selected potato producing households. A two-limit Tobit model result revealed that variation in districts, access to irrigation, frequency of extension contact, and livestock holding significantly affected intensity of adoption of both DAP and Urea in potato production. In addition, access to credit and annual income significantly determined adoption intensity of DAP. It is therefore, essential to give due emphasis to these determinants in supporting smallholder farmers in order to enhance potato productivity.

Why do Smallholder Farmers Apply Inorganic Fertilizers below theRecommended Rates? Empirical Evidence from Potato Production inEastern Ethiopia

Production of wheat by smallholder farmers in Ethiopia contributes a significant share to the agricultural production of the country. However, the actual productivity of the crop has been far below its potential. Varied levels of technology adoption are often observed among smallholder farmers producing the crop. For enhanced dissemination of technology packages and improving wheat productivity, it is vital to elucidate socio-economic factors that are behind disparity in technology adaption among smallholder farmers. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyse the socio-economic, institutional, and other pertinent variables that determine the existing disparity observed among smallholder farmers in terms of adopting wheat production technology packages in Gurawa and Meta districts of eastern Ethiopia. The study utilized survey data collected from 124 randomly selected wheat households producing wheat. For this purpose, an ordered logit model was applied. The econometric results revealed that age of the household head, membership in cooperative institutions, and household annual income significantly and positively explained the disparity observed in adoption of wheat production technology packages. Conversely, gender of household head (sex), farming experiences, number of plots owned, and frequency of contacts with extension agents explained the disparity significantly, but negatively. It could be concluded that development practitioners, planners, and policy makers should give due considerations to the aforementioned socio-economic and institutional factors when designing dissemination of wheat production technology packages for adoption by farmers.
