The Revelations of St. Birgitta of Sweden Volume 3 : LIber Caelestis Books VI-VII

Abstract: This is the third of four volumes and it contains Book VI and Book VII of Birgitta's (or Bridget's) Revelations. Book VI has a particularly initimate biographical character and contains revelations based on Birgitta's everyday world in both Sweden and Italy. These revelations are blended with political, ecclesiastical and apocalyptic messages. Book VII, one of the most important books of the Revelations, describes Birgitta's visit to the Holy Land.

The Revelations of St. Birgitta of Sweden, Volume 4: The Heavenly Emperor’s Book to Kings, The Rule, and Minor Works

Abstract: This is the fourth and final volume of the modern English translation of St. Birgitta of Sweden’s Revelations into English. It contains the supplementary and liturgical materials relating to St. Birgitta’s monastic foundation that came to have houses throughout Europe. There are also some personal revelations and prayers that shed light on her spiritual growth and thinking in the early years of her calling. The volume begins with Book VIII, “The Heavenly Emperor’s Book to Kings” (Liber caelestis Imperatoris ad reges), a collection of revelations on political subjects. It is prefaced by Alfonso of Jaen’s defense of Birgitta’s writings, known as the “Hermit’s Letter to Kings” (Epistola solitarii ad reges). The liturgical material include the Birgittine “Rule of the Holy Savior” (Regula Salvatoris), the Matins readings for the nuns known as the “Angel’s Discourse” (Sermo angelicus), and four prayers (Quattuor orationes) composed by Birgitta. The last book contains the scattered revelations that make up the Revelationes extravagantes, a collection of 116 revelations that lie on the periphery of the main corpus and were omitted from the canonization edition.

Saint or Politician: A Gendered Analysis of Catherine Benincasa’s Letters

Abstract: Over the nearly seven hundred years since Catherine Benincasa’s death there has been a flow of almost continuous scholarly and spiritual work that has been written about her. Catherine is one of the few well documented women, of her historical period, in history. However, there is a large gap in the historiography of Catherine, and that is looking at the effect of her letters on her audience and possible implications of her letters on the political and spiritual landscape of her time and beyond. An important piece of looking at Catherine’s spiritual and political career is using a feminist or subaltern methodology to understand how Catherine’s gender influenced the outcome of her career. This thesis approaches the political and spiritual career of Catherine Benincasa through her many letters. In particular, this thesis will trace how she uses two particular rhetorical devises to call her audience to action. Further this thesis will examine how her audiences’ gender impacted the meaning of the rhetorical devises she used.
