Numerical melting performance analysis of a cylindrical thermal energy storage unit using nano-enhanced PCM and multiple horizontal fins

This study numerically investigates the effect of the number and arrangement of tubes on the melting performance of a phase change material (PCM) in a multi-tube shell-and-tube latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) system. An enthalpy-porosity model was used to simulate the phase change process. Eight arrangements of tubes were examined. The melting characteristics, energy density, distributions of the liquid fraction and temperature, heat transfer rate, and melting time were analyzed. The melting performance and energy density were influenced by both the number and arrangement of tubes. An increase in the number of tubes enhanced the melting rate in the initial stage and the energy density. The tube arrangement affected the required melting time. Two vertically arranged tubes resulted in the lowest melting time, and eight tubes resulted in the highest energy density. A correlation is proposed to estimate the total melting time with respect to the number and arrangement of tubes in LHTES.

Nowadays electric vehicle is replacing internal combustion engines in the transport sector. The growth of electric vehicles is increasing rapidly to reduce the impact of global warming and climate change. The battery limits the use of electric vehicles as an exact alternative to traditional IC engine vehicles. Specifically, the operating temperature, charge/discharge rates, and internal heat generation of the battery the performance of electric vehicles, like the driving range, charge storage capacity, the cycle life of the battery, and thermal runaway occurring at high temperatures. To overcome these problems, the battery thermal management system (BTMS) controls the temperature of the battery and maintains the optimal temperature to operate the battery efficiently and safely. In the heights of the above facts, the numerical analysis of 18650 Li-ion battery thermal management systems by passive cooling technology using Phase Change Material (PCM). The recent developments in battery thermal management systems, in particular, battery module analysis with and without PCM at different C rates, with and without fin are discussed at length.Numerical Analysis using ANSYS FLUENT is carried out to determine the effect of the use of PCM on heat transfer in the battery module. Temperature distribution along the battery in the region of PCM with and without the use of fins of various geometries and their configuration are predicted. Among all the geometries studied, the use of “I” section fin had a profound beneficial effect on heat transfer leading to better performance of the battery.

Numerical Analysis of Battery Thermal Management System Using Passive Cooling Technique

Tropical countries like India, the ambient temperature reaches to 45–50∘C in the summer and higher ambient temperature directly impacts the energy required by the household refrigerator. This paper presents an experimental performance of a domestic refrigerator incorporated with a phase change material (PCM)-based condenser in parallel to the conventional wire-and-tube air-cooled condenser for the climatic conditions of India. It is proposed to operate the refrigerator with the PCM-based condenser, while the ambient temperature is higher during the day, otherwise with the air-cooled condenser. Due to large latent heat storage capacity of the PCM, the condenser temperature would not increase significantly. The COP of the PCM-based condenser was 28% higher as compared to air cooled condenser for 60min which reduce to 3% as PCM temperature reached to 33∘C. The energy consumption is lower by ∼15% in 312h of refrigerator experimentation with the proposed modification.

Due to the utilization of solar thermal energy and environmentally friendly nature, globally there is a huge thrust toward the development of vapor adsorption refrigeration systems. Indeed, it is necessary to identify the minimum, maximum and optimum temperatures of heat source for solar-powered adsorption systems. With this objective, the presented paper focuses on the evaluation of lower, upper and optimum temperatures of the heat source to run the adsorption refrigeration system. Performance parameters, cooling capacity and coefficient of performance (COP), have been utilized to derive the limits of source (desorption) temperatures and applied to two different adsorbent–adsorbate pairs, namely Maxsorb III–ethanol and Maxsorb III– R134a. The adsorption and evaporator temperatures considered for the analysis are 25–40 °C and − 10–10 °C, respectively.
