Journal ArticleDOI
Ultrasound measurements of intraabdominal fat estimate the metabolic syndrome better than do measurements of waist circumference
TL;DR: When IAF is measured by ultrasound, the associations are more pronounced than when WC measurements are used and are independent of BMI, suggesting that IAF can be more reliably assessed by ultrasound measurements than by WC measurements.
Journal ArticleDOI

Stefan Störk,Richard A Feelders,Annewieke W. van den Beld,Ewout W. Steyerberg,Huub F. J. Savelkoul,Steven W. J. Lamberts,Diederick E. Grobbee,Michiel L. Bots +7 more
TL;DR: In the old and very old, IL-6 and number of carotid plaques are powerful predictors of mortality risk in the years to come, and conventional risk scores seem to perform unsatisfactorily.
Journal ArticleDOI
Depressive symptoms in subjects with diagnosed and undiagnosed type 2 diabetes.
Mirjam J. Knol,Eibert R. Heerdink,Antoine C. G. Egberts,Mirjam I. Geerlings,Kees J. Gorter,Mattijs E. Numans,Diederick E. Grobbee,Olaf H. Klungel,Huibert Burger +8 more
TL;DR: The findings suggest that disturbed glucose homeostasis is not associated with depressive symptoms, and suggests that depressive symptoms might be a consequence of the burden of diabetes.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: Early VMS were not associated with increased CVD risk, and were associated with decreased risk of stroke, total CVD events, and all-cause mortality.
Journal ArticleDOI
Public awareness of heart failure in Europe: first results from SHAPE
Willem J. Remme,John J.V. McMurray,Bernhard H. Rauch,Faiez Zannad,Karen Keukelaar,Alain Cohen-Solal,Jose Lopez-Sendon,F. D. R. Hobbs,Diederick E. Grobbee,Alessandro Boccanelli,Charles Cline,Cezar Macarie,Rainer Dietz,Witold Rużyłło +13 more
TL;DR: In Europe, community awareness of HF is low and the general public is unlikely to demand appropriate measures by healthcare authorities and providers, so strategies to educate the public about HF are needed.
