Building in Egypt: Pharaonic Stone Masonry

Abstract: Reprint of the leading book on the methods of stone construction in Egypt from the beginnings at the pyramid complex of Djoser at Saqqara in 2700 B.C. through the pyramids of the Old and Middle Kingdoms to the hypostyle hall at Karnak and other buildings. The book covers the production, quarrying, and transport of stone and tools used in the buildings, and combats speculative literature on how the builders solved certain technical problems.

The Plain of Phaistos: Cycles of Social Complexity in the Mesara Region of Crete

Abstract: The volume presents the results on an interdisciplinary regional field project (1984 - 1987) carried out on the island Of Crete. This volume traces the changing patterns of settlement and cycles of social complexity from the Late Neolithic period to the present day within the heartland of the state of Phaistos. The authors and contributors publish geological, archaeological, environmental, botanical, historical and ethnographic studies that establish the regional identity of the Western Mesara. Using a combination of empirical, processual and post-processual theoretical approaches, the volume investigates a central problem - how and why did the Bronze Age and Classical states arise at Phaistos?

The cultures of the Middle Palaeolithic/Middle Stone Age

Abstract: The 'Middle Palaeolithic', or the 'Middle Stone Age', is part of the prehistoric cultural record that follows the Lower Palaeolithic or Earlier Stone Age, and precedes the Upper Palaeolithic or Later Stone Age. The Middle Palaeolithic/Middle Stone Age makes its first appearance more than 100000 years ago during the Last Interglacial, in Africa a time of somewhat increased rainfall, warmer climate, and transgressive sea level. The Middle Palaeolithic of the Maghrib and Sahara is usually divided into two broad complexes, the Mousterian and the Aterian, though at many sites it is not always possible to be certain which of the two is represented. The Middle Stone Age in Ethiopia and the Horn resembles in general, therefore, the typical Mousterian of Levallois facies of Europe though there are, in addition to the Levallois cores, an important percentage of core forms for the production of non-Levallois flakes.

Order and accounting as a performative ritual: Evidence from ancient Egypt

Abstract: This paper examines the role of the discursive power of counting, accounting numbers and inscriptions in the creation and promotion of ‘order’ in society. This theme is explored by examining the link between accounting and order in the New Kingdom (1552–1080 BC), ancient Egypt. Accounting is conceptualized as an integral part of the assemblage that formed the heavenly order deemed by the ancient Egyptians to underpin their world. This assemblage brought into a fragile equilibrium a complex set of relations between the gods in the sky, the Pharaohs, their living subjects, and the dead. Any destabilizing of this order was viewed by the ancient Egyptians as catastrophic. Accounting functioned as a performative ritual that constructed coherence and order in the cosmos, on earth and in the netherworld. Accounting numbers were frequently combined with linguistic texts and pictorial scenes in architecture to produce a monumental discourse that made possible the construction and perpetuation of this orderly schema. The paper concludes by identifying the main implications of this argument for the theorizing of accounting.
