Abstract: Jute fibres were subjected to a 5% alkali (NaOH) solution treatment for 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 h at 30°C. An improvement in the crystallinity in the jute fibres increased its modulus by 12%, 68% and 79% after 4, 6 and 8 h of treatment respectively. The tenacity of the fibres improved by 46% after 6 and 8 h treatment and the % breaking strain was reduced by 23% after 8 h treatment. For the 35% composites with 4 h treated fibres, the flexural strength improved from 199.1 MPa to 238.9 MPa by 20%, modulus improved from 11.89 GPa to 14.69 GPa by 23% and laminar shear strength increased from 0.238 MPa to 0.2834 MPa by 19%. On plotting the different values of slopes obtained from the rates of improvement of the flexural strength and modulus, against the NaOH treatment time, two different failure modes were apparent before and after 4 h of treatment. In the first region between 0 and 4 h, fibre pull out was predominant whereas in the second region between 6 and 8 h, transverse fracture occurred with a minimum fibre pull out. This observation was well supported by the SEM investigations of the fracture surfaces.

Abstract: Changes occurring in jute fibers when treated with a 5% concentration of a NaOH solution for 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 h were characterized by weight loss, linear density, tenacity, modulus, FTIR, and X-ray measurements. A 9.63% weight loss was measured during 2 h of treatment with a drop of hemicellulose content from 22 to 12.90%. The linear density value showed no change until 2 h of treatment followed by a decrease from 33.0 to 14.5 denier by 56% after 6 h of treatment. The tenacity and modulus of the fibers improved by 45 and 79%, respectively, and the percent breaking strain was reduced by 23% after 8 h of treatment. X-ray diffractograms showed increase in crystallinity of the fibers only after 6 h of treatment, while FTIR measurements showed much of the changes occurring by 2 h of treatment with an increased amount of OH groups. By measuring the rate of change of the modulus, tenacity, and percent breaking strain with the time of treatment, a clear transition was apparent at 4 h of treatment with the dissolution of hemicellulose, causing a weight loss and drop in the linear density before and development of crystallinity with an improvement in the properties after the transition time. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Abstract: The main objective of this work was to extract microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) particles from different cellulosic resources like cotton, jute, newsprint, filter paper and investigate their suitability as green reinforcing material in biocomposites. The MCC particles were extracted by acid hydrolysis with 64% sulphuric acid. The processing parameters like acid concentration, temperature, time and mechanical force were kept constant. The MCC particles were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), particle size analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The viscoelastic properties of the MCC particles were investigated with the help of nanoindentation technique for the first time. The acid hydrolysis changed the %crystallinity and crystallite sizes of the MCC particles compared to their source materials. The modulus and hardness of the MCC particles varied significantly depending on their precursors. The presence of non-cellulosic constituents controlled the deformation behaviour of the MCC particles. The thermal stability of the MCC particles was correlated with the tangling effect of the flexible cellulose chains.

Abstract: Studies on the use of natural fibers as replacement to man-made fiber in fiber-reinforced composites have increased and opened up further industrial possibilities. Natural fibers have the advantages of low density, low cost, and biodegradability. However, the main disadvantages of natural fibers in composites are the poor compatibility between fiber and matrix and the relative high moisture sorption. Therefore, chemical treatments are considered in modifying the fiber surface properties. In this paper, the different chemical modifications on natural fibers for use in natural fiber-reinforced composites are reviewed. Chemical treatments including alkali, silane, acetylation, benzoylation, acrylation, maleated coupling agents, isocyanates, permanganate and others are discussed. The chemical treatment of fiber aimed at improving the adhesion between the fiber surface and the polymer matrix may not only modify the fiber surface but also increase fiber strength. Water absorption of composites is reduced and their mechanical properties are improved.

Abstract: In this work, natural fibres (sisal, kenaf, hemp, jute and coir) reinforced polypropylene composites were processed by compression moulding using a film stacking method. The mechanical properties of the different natural fibre composites were tested and compared. A further comparison was made with the corresponding properties of glass mat reinforced polypropylene composites from the open literature. Kenaf, hemp and sisal composites showed comparable tensile strength and modulus results but in impact properties hemp appears to out-perform kenaf. The tensile modulus, impact strength and the ultimate tensile stress of kenaf reinforced polypropylene composites were found to increase with increasing fibre weight fraction. Coir fibre composites displayed the lowest mechanical properties, but their impact strength was higher than that of jute and kenaf composites. In most cases the specific properties of the natural fibre composites were found to compare favourably with those of glass.

Abstract: In recent years, natural fibers reinforced composites have received much attention because of their lightweight, nonabrasive, combustible, nontoxic, low cost and biodegradable properties. Among the various natural fibers; flax, bamboo, sisal, hemp, ramie, jute, and wood fibers are of particular interest. A lot of research work has been performed all over the world on the use of natural fibers as a reinforcing material for the preparation of various types of composites. However, lack of good interfacial adhesion, low melting point, and poor resistance towards moisture make the use of natural fiber reinforced composites less attractive. Pretreatments of the natural fiber can clean the fiber surface, chemically modify the surface, stop the moisture absorption process, and increase the surface roughness. Among the various pretreatment techniques, graft copolymerization and plasma treatment are the best methods for surface modification of natural fibers. Graft copolymers of natural fibers with vinyl monomers provide better adhesion between matrix and fiber. In the present article, the use of pretreated natural fibers in polymer matrix-based composites has been reviewed. Effect of surface modification of natural fibers on the properties of fibers and fiber reinforced polymer composites has also been discussed. POLYM. ENG.
