Abstract: In the past few decades, a growing body of literature examining children’s perspectives on their own lives has developed within a variety of disciplines, such as sociology, psychology, anthropology and geography. This article provides a brief up-to-date examination of methodological and ethical issues that researchers may need to consider when designing research studies involving children; and a review of some of the methods and techniques used to elicit their views. The article aims to encourage researchers to critically reflect on these methodological issues and the techniques they choose to use, since they will have implications for the data produced.

Abstract: We report measurements of x-ray scattering cross sections for dense plasmas created by subjecting aluminum foils to strong laser-driven shocks. A narrow cone of quasimonochromatic x-rays at $\ensuremath{\sim}4.75\mathrm{keV}$ was used to probe the shocked part of the foil and scattered photons were detected with a CCD camera. The scattering cross section shows a clear peak, indicating diffraction from the plasma. Analysis and simulation of the data suggest that radiative heating and electron-ion energy exchange are important factors in the plasma production.

Abstract: Emotional maltreatment tends to be overshadowed in research and in practice by other forms of maltreatment that present more obvious and explicit evidence and appear to require a more urgent response. This article aims to explore a growing body of research pointing to: (a) ways in which emotional maltreatment may adversely impact upon a child's development and functioning; (b) factors that practitioners may wish to consider when determining whether significant harm has occurred or is likely to occur in cases of emotional maltreatment; and (c) various levels of intervention that may be usefully applied to build stronger attachment and relationship with parents or carers and to reduce emotionally harmful behaviour of the carers.

Abstract: Accurate x-ray scattering techniques to measure the physical properties of dense plasmas have been developed for applications in high energy density physics. This class of experiments produces short-lived hot dense states of matter with electron densities in the range of solid density and higher where powerful penetrating x-ray sources have become available for probing. Experiments have employed laser-based x-ray sources that provide sufficient photon numbers in narrow bandwidth spectral lines, allowing spectrally resolved x-ray scattering measurements from these plasmas. The backscattering spectrum accesses the noncollective Compton scattering regime which provides accurate diagnostic information on the temperature, density, and ionization state. The forward scattering spectrum has been shown to measure the collective plasmon oscillations. Besides extracting the standard plasma parameters, density and temperature, forward scattering yields new observables such as a direct measure of collisions and quantum effects. Dense matter theory relates scattering spectra with the dielectric function and structure factors that determine the physical properties of matter. Applications to radiation-heated and shock-compressed matter have demonstrated accurate measurements of compression and heating with up to picosecond temporal resolution.
