Forest and agricultural land change in the Carpathian region: A meta-analysis of long-term patterns and drivers of change
Catalina Munteanu,Tobias Kuemmerle,Tobias Kuemmerle,Martin Boltiziar,Martin Boltiziar,Van Butsic,Van Butsic,Urs Gimmi,Lubos Halada,Dominik Kaim,Géza Király,Éva Konkoly-Gyuró,Jacek Kozak,Juraj Lieskovský,Juraj Lieskovský,Matej Mojses,Daniel Müller,Daniel Müller,Krzystof Ostafin,Katarzyna Ostapowicz,Katarzyna Ostapowicz,Oleksandra Shandra,Přemysl Štych,Sarah Walker,Volker C. Radeloff +24 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a meta-analysis of 66 publications describing 102 case study locations and quantified the main forest and agricultural changes in the Carpathian region since the 18th century.
Journal ArticleDOI
Legacies of 19th century land use shape contemporary forest cover
Catalina Munteanu,Tobias Kuemmerle,Nicholas S. Keuler,Daniel Müller,Daniel Müller,Pál Balázs,Monika Dobosz,Patrick Griffiths,Lubos Halada,Dominik Kaim,Géza Király,Éva Konkoly-Gyuró,Jacek Kozak,Juraj Lieskovsky,Juraj Lieskovsky,Krzysztof Ostafin,Katarzyna Ostapowicz,Katarzyna Ostapowicz,Oleksandra Shandra,Volker C. Radeloff +19 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the impact of historical land use legacies on contemporary forest disturbance and afforestation in the Carpathian region in Eastern Europe. And they found that the odds of forest disturbance were about 50% higher in areas that were not forested in 1860 (new forests) compared to those that were forested then (old forests).
Journal ArticleDOI
Understanding farmland abandonment in the Polish Carpathians
Natalia Kolecka,Jacek Kozak,Dominik Kaim,Monika Dobosz,Krzysztof Ostafin,Katarzyna Ostapowicz,Piotr Wężyk,Bronwyn Price +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors detected secondary forest succession on abandoned fields using Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) point clouds and topographic data in 230 sample areas (tiles) distributed throughout the Carpathian communes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Broad scale forest cover reconstruction from historical topographic maps
Dominik Kaim,Jacek Kozak,Natalia Kolecka,Elżbieta Ziółkowska,Krzysztof Ostafin,Katarzyna Ostapowicz,Urs Gimmi,Catalina Munteanu,Volker C. Radeloff +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors assess different methods to reconstruct land cover and land use from historical maps to identify a time-efficient and reliable method for broad-scale land cover change analysis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mapping Secondary Forest Succession on Abandoned Agricultural Land with LiDAR Point Clouds and Terrestrial Photography
TL;DR: The results of this study indicate that the proposed methodology can potentially be applied in large-scale mapping of secondary forest succession patterns on abandoned land in mountain areas.
