TL;DR: In this article, a new method of survival analysis, denoted as "period" analysis, was introduced to provide more up-to-date survival estimates of cancer patients, which is especially useful for monitoring childhood cancer survival, because at a given point in time it provides more timely estimates of long-term survival expectations than the cohort life-table method.

TL;DR: Major improvement in prognosis for children with leukaemia or lymphoma has been ongoing in Europe during the 1990s, but further monitoring and investments are required to remove the large regional differences between European regions.
