Journal ArticleDOI
Use of resonance energy-transfer to monitor membrane-fusion
TL;DR: An assay for vesicle--vesicle fusion involving resonance energy transfer between N-(7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazol-4-yl), the energy donor, and rhodamine, the energy acceptor has been developed.
Journal ArticleDOI
A signal-arrest-release sequence mediates export and control of the phage P1 endolysin
TL;DR: Examination of the protein sequences of related bacteriophage endolysins suggests that the presence of an N-terminal signal-arrest-release sequence is not unique to Lyz, which is both necessary and sufficient not only for export of this endolysin to the membrane but also for its release into the periplasm.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rz/Rz1 lysis gene equivalents in phages of Gram-negative hosts.
TL;DR: It is reported that a search strategy based primarily on gene arrangement and membrane localization signals rather than sequence similarity has revealed that Rz/Rz1 equivalents are nearly ubiquitous among phages of Gram-negative hosts, with 120 of 137 phages possessing genes that fit the search criteria.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cloning and characterization of a hemolysin gene from Actinobacillus (Haemophilus) pleuropneumoniae.
TL;DR: Hemolytic activity could be detected in lysates of E. coli harboring plasmids containing the appCa genes, and two open reading frames encoding proteins with predicted masses of 18.5 and 102.5 kD were found in P. haemolytica.
Journal ArticleDOI
Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae RTX-toxins: uniform designation of haemolysins, cytolysins, pleurotoxin and their genes.

TL;DR: The three different pore-forming RTX-toxins of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae are reviewed, and new and uniform designations for these toxins and their genes are proposed.
