A suitable combination of linear and nonlinear models provides a more accurate prediction model than an individual linear or nonlinear model for forecasting time series data originating from various applications. The linear autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and nonlinear artificial neural network (ANN) models are explored in this paper to devise a new hybrid ARIMA-ANN model for the prediction of time series data. Many of the hybrid ARIMA-ANN models which exist in the literature apply an ARIMA model to given time series data, consider the error between the original and the ARIMA-predicted data as a nonlinear component, and model it using an ANN in different ways. Though these models give predictions with higher accuracy than the individual models, there is scope for further improvement in the accuracy if the nature of the given time series is taken into account before applying the models. In the work described in this paper, the nature of volatility was explored using a moving-average filter, and then an ARIMA and an ANN model were suitably applied. Using a simulated data set and experimental data sets such as sunspot data, electricity price data, and stock market data, the proposed hybrid ARIMA-ANN model was applied along with individual ARIMA and ANN models and some existing hybrid ARIMA-ANN models. The results obtained from all of these data sets show that for both one-step-ahead and multistep-ahead forecasts, the proposed hybrid model has higher prediction accuracy.

A moving-average filter based hybrid ARIMA-ANN model for forecasting time series data

In many real-world application, e.g., speech recognition or sleep stage classification, data are captured over the course of time, constituting a Time-Series. Time-Series often contain temporal dependencies that cause two otherwise identical points of time to belong to different classes or predict different behavior. This characteristic generally increases the difficulty of analysing them. Existing techniques often depended on hand-crafted features that were expensive to create and required expert knowledge of the field. With the advent of Deep Learning new models of unsupervised learning of features for Time-series analysis and forecast have been developed. Such new developments are the topic of this paper: a review of the main Deep Learning techniques is presented, and some applications on Time-Series analysis are summaried. The results make it clear that Deep Learning has a lot to contribute to the field.

Carbon price forecasting with a novel hybrid ARIMA and least squares support vector machines methodology

Forecasting the stock market price index is a challenging task. The exponential smoothing model (ESM), autoregressive integrated moving average model (ARIMA), and the back propagation neural network (BPNN) can be used to make forecasts based on time series. In this paper, a hybrid approach combining ESM, ARIMA, and BPNN is proposed to be the most advantageous of all three models. The weight of the proposed hybrid model (PHM) is determined by genetic algorithm (GA). The closing of the Shenzhen Integrated Index (SZII) and opening of the Dow Jones Industrial Average Index (DJIAI) are used as illustrative examples to evaluate the performances of the PHM. Numerical results show that the proposed model outperforms all traditional models, including ESM, ARIMA, BPNN, the equal weight hybrid model (EWH), and the random walk model (RWM).
