A communication application server for supporting converged communications in a communication system. The communication application server is responsive to communication service requests from external endpoints, applications or other requesting entities, and in one embodiment comprises at least first and second components. The first component is operative: (i) to process a given one of the communication service requests to identify at least one corresponding communication service supported by the communication application server; (ii) to determine one or more executable communication tasks associated with the identified communication service; and (iii) to establish communication with one or more external servers to carry out execution of at least a subset of the one or more executable communication taks associated with the communication service. The second component is coupled between the first component and the one or more external servers, and provides, for each of the external servers, a corresponding interface for connecting the communication application server to the external server.

A data management system operable between a set of presentation layer servers, a set of application servers and a set of data servers. The data management system includes: a session manager routing users to at least one of a plurality of presentation layer servers; an application manager coupling business applications provided by the business application servers responsive to user interaction with the presentation servers; and a data manager coupling business applications to at least one of a plurality of data sets.

Selecting includes storing a plurality of user defined object types for defining attributes of user contributed objects, and storing a plurality of user contributed objects, each having an object type. Selecting further includes receiving from a user a request for one or more of the stored objects, wherein at least one of the requested objects has a user defined object type, and selecting an advertisement to provide to the user based at least in part on the user defined object type of the one or more requested objects.

Advertisement selection in an electronic application system

This paper discusses the infrastructure that IBM is providing to support the World Wide Web and to facilitate Web applications and commerce. This effort started as an architecture called the Network Computing Framework (NCF), and is now the foundation of the IBM WebSphere Application ServerTM. The WebSphere Application Server is a product IBM first delivered in June 1998. In this paper we discuss this architecture and programming model We start with a brief introduction and history of the NCF, then examine the architecture of the WebSphere Application Server. We take a close look at the core run time of the WebSphere Application Server, then delve into the JavaTM programming model that supports this architecture. We also present the reasons why Java is a prominent part of this architecture, and see what relevant technologies Java provides for this run time.
