This paper presents a study on the modeling of a D-STATCOM (Distribution Static Compensator) used for mitigating voltage sag on a distribution network. The power circuits of the D-STATCOM and the distribution network are modeled by specific blocks from the Power System Block set while the control system is modeled by Simulink blocks. A main feeder feeding a 10 MW load is abruptly disturbed by the inclusion of a sudden load of 10 MW thereby creating voltage sag. This voltage sag is corrected by the static compensator.

Mitigation of Voltage Sag by Using Distribution Static Compensator (D-STATCOM)

Reactive power is thelatent soul of power system. Capacitor is a well-known reactive power resource and used for reactive power compensation in mainly transmission and distribution system. This paper presents the optimal placement of capacitor (OCP) as to nullify the effects of inductive loading in radial distribution system. For optimization technique Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used which is implemented in ETAP 7.0.0 Power Station software. Results such as voltage support, power lossesand annual benefits are analyzed. Computational results show compensation of reactive power which in turn results in voltage support, minimize power losses and increases annual benefits. The method is easier and time saving. General Terms: Voltage profile improvement in radial distribution system, capacitor placement, reactive power compensation.

Optimal Placement of Capacitor for Voltage Support and Minimizing Overall Cost in Radial Distribution System

This paper presents research work in distribution system voltage and var optimization. For increased efficiency and voltage regulation, an increasing number of voltage and var control devices have been adopted by utilities. These devices usually work autonomously according to local conditions, and consequently the controller settings may not be optimized in terms of specific objectives such as loss minimization and demand reduction. To reach an optimal solution, these controllers need to work collectively within a coordinated framework considering system conditions. This paper reports on-going research in voltage and var optimization. Results considering different load type combinations are presented. It is shown that load types play an essential role in determining the optimization solution.

Analysis of Distribution Systems with DSTATCOM

Analytical results of the capacitor placement for radial distribution power systems are presented in this paper. Based on the analytical results, a simple approximate optimal capacitor placement algorithm is proposed. Unlike existing optimal capacitor placement algorithms, the proposed algorithm formulates the optimal capacitor placement problem in a simple form instead of an integer nonlinear programming problem. The proposed algorithm guarantees to approximately reach the global optimal solution, with a small number of calculations. Simulation results of the proposed algorithm on 10 bus system and 30 bus system are presented in this paper.
