Productivity of crops grown for human consumption is at risk due to the incidence of pests, especially weeds, pathogens and animal pests. Crop losses due to these harmful organisms can be substantial and may be prevented, or reduced, by crop protection measures. An overview is given on different types of crop losses as well as on various methods of pest control developed during the last century.Estimates on potential and actual losses despite the current crop protection practices are given for wheat, rice, maize, potatoes, soybeans, and cotton for the period 2001–03 on a regional basis (19 regions) as well as for the global total. Among crops, the total global potential loss due to pests varied from about 50% in wheat to more than 80% in cotton production. The responses are estimated as losses of 26–29% for soybean, wheat and cotton, and 31, 37 and 40% for maize, rice and potatoes, respectively. Overall, weeds produced the highest potential loss (34%), with animal pests and pathogens being less important (losses of 18 and 16%). The efficacy of crop protection was higher in cash crops than in food crops. Weed control can be managed mechanically or chemically, therefore worldwide efficacy was considerably higher than for the control of animal pests or diseases, which rely heavily on synthetic chemicals. Regional differences in efficacy are outlined. Despite a clear increase in pesticide use, crop losses have not significantly decreased during the last 40 years. However, pesticide use has enabled farmers to modify production systems and to increase crop productivity without sustaining the higher losses likely to occur from an increased susceptibility to the damaging effect of pests.The concept of integrated pest/crop management includes a threshold concept for the application of pest control measures and reduction in the amount/frequency of pesticides applied to an economically and ecologically acceptable level. Often minor crop losses are economically acceptable; however, an increase in crop productivity without adequate crop protection does not make sense, because an increase in attainable yields is often associated with an increased vulnerability to damage inflicted by pests.

Anatomy of Seed Plants

In the classical formulation of Munch (1930), plasmodesmata are considered to form simple cytoplasmic bridges between neighbouring plant cells to create the symplasm. This concept has dominated, if not monopolized, the thinking of plant biologists and in particular plant physiologists over the last few decades. Recent advances in ultrastructural, physiological and molecular studies on plasmodesmata indicate that this simple view is in need of revision. Structurally, the higher plant plasmodesma has been revealed to be a supramolecular complex consisting of membranes and proteins. Functionally, evidence is at hand that this complex structure appears to have evolved not only to control the size exclusion limit for intercellular diffusion of metabolites and small molecules, but also to potentiate and regulate intercellular trafficking of macromolecules, including proteins and nucleic acids. In this regard, plasmodesmal transport may share parallel regulatory mechanisms with nucleocytoplasmic transport. Based on these findings, we advance the hypothesis that plants function as supracellular, rather than multicellular, organisms. As such, the dynamics of the plant body, including cell differentiation, tissue formation, organogenesis and specialized physiological function(s), is subject to plasmodesmal regulation. Plasmodesmata presumably accomplish such regulatory roles by trafficking informational molecules which orchestrate both metabolic activity and gene expression. Current and future studies on the evolutionary origin(s) of plasmodesmata are likely to provide valuable information in terms of the genetic and molecular basis for the supracellular nature of plants. Plasmodesmata and the supracellular nature of plants

Soilborne root diseases caused by plant pathogenic Pythium species cause serious losses in a number of agricultural production systems, which has led to a considerable effort devoted to the development of biological agents for disease control. In this article we review information on the ecology and biological control of these pathogens with the premise that a clear understanding of the ecology of the pathogen will assist in the development of efficacious biocontrol agents. The lifecycles of the pathogens and etiology of host infection also are reviewed, as are epidemiological concepts of inoculum-disease relationships and the influence of environmental factors on pathogen aggressiveness and host susceptibility. A number of fungal and bacterial biocontrol agents are discussed and parallels between their ecology and that of the target pathogens highlighted. Publisher Summary Plants constitute the largest and most important group of autotrophic life-forms on earth. Their abundant organic material serves as a nutritional source for all heterotrophic organisms, including animals, insects, and microbes. This chapter discusses pathogen ingress and plant resistance, classes of plant defense responses, regulation of defense gene expression, and defense responses and resistance. Plant pathogens usually express several virulence functions that increase their ability to colonize and damage host plants. Enormous progress has been made over the past decades in the understanding of the highly complex molecular events that occur in plant-pathogen interactions. A large body of circumstantial evidence has accumulated, implicating diverse biochemical responses in plant defense. Despite species-specific differences, plants do appear to have evolved common basic defense strategies comprising very rapid, localized, and systemic defense mechanisms for establishing resistance. Although the knowledge is still rudimentary, a number of common signaling molecules have been identified lending insight to the signal transduction pathways employed for intra- and intercellular communication. Manipulation of biosynthetic pathways involving multiple genes, such as the biosynthesis of phytoalexins, has not yet been achieved, although it should be feasible to modify rate-limiting steps of pathways or to divert precursors into novel pathways by the introduction of defined genes.

Measurements of competitive saprophytic colonization were used to evaluate the activity of Tricho? derma harzianum in non-sterile soil under conditions of varying soil moisture and temperature. Esti? mates of activity based on levels of colonization, determined after homogenization of substrate pieces, were more discriminating than those based on the number of colonized pieces. T. harzianum was found to be most active at soil matric potentials from -0.5 to -1.0 bar, with activity declining at matric potentials of 0.0, -7.5, and -15.0 bars. Effects of Soil Moisture and Temperature on the Saprophytic Ability of Trichoderma Harzianum

Beginning in 1997, a new disease of spinach was found in the Salinas Valley, Monterey County, CA. Initial symptoms were leaf spots that were 2 to 5 mm in diameter, circular, and gray-green in color. Spots later enlarged, turned tan in color, and became dry and papery in texture, resembling phytotoxicity due to agrichemicals. Although fungal signs were generally absent from the spots, Stemphylium botryosum was consistently isolated and caused identical symptoms when inoculated onto 20 spinach cultivars. Three isolates did not cause disease symptoms when inoculated onto other crop plants representing 16 different genera and a Chenopodium weed species. A fourth isolate showed similar results with the exception of small leaf spots occurring on inoculated fava bean. Isolates produced a Pleospora herbarum teleomorph after 7 months incubation at 5°C. Preliminary experiments with cell-free culture filtrates indicated that phytotoxins apparently were not produced by these isolates. This is the first report of a foliar spinach disease caused by S. botryosum.
