Sea-level fluctuations during the last glacial cycle
Mark Siddall,Eelco J. Rohling,Ahuva Almogi-Labin,Ch. Hemleben,Dieter Meischner,I. Schmelzer,David A. Smeed +6 more
TL;DR: A hydraulic model of the water exchange between the Red Sea and the world ocean is used to derive the sill depth—and hence global sea level—over the past 470,000 years, finding that sea-level changes of up to 35 m occurred, coincident with abrupt changes in climate.
Journal ArticleDOI
Centennial-scale climate cooling with a sudden cold event around 8,200 years ago
Eelco J. Rohling,Heiko Pälike +1 more
TL;DR: The compounded nature of the signals implies that far-field climate anomalies around 8,200 years ago cannot be used in a straightforward manner to assess the impact of a slowdown of North Atlantic Deep Water formation, and the geographical extent of the rapid cooling event 8, 200 years ago remains to be determined.
Journal ArticleDOI
Magnitudes of sea-level lowstands of the past 500,000 years
TL;DR: In this article, an isotope-based method was used to estimate sea level and global ice-volume from the recent geological past using fossil coral-reef terraces or oxygen-isotope records from benthic foraminifera.
Journal ArticleDOI
Assessing "dangerous climate change": required reduction of carbon emissions to protect young people, future generations and nature.
James Hansen,Pushker Kharecha,Pushker Kharecha,Makiko Sato,Valérie Masson-Delmotte,Frank Ackerman,David J. Beerling,Paul J. Hearty,Ove Hoegh-Guldberg,Shi-Ling Hsu,Camille Parmesan,Camille Parmesan,Johan Rockström,Eelco J. Rohling,Eelco J. Rohling,Jeffrey D. Sachs,Pete Smith,Konrad Steffen,Lise Van Susteren,Karina von Schuckmann,James C Zachos +20 more
TL;DR: Climate impacts of global warming is assessed using ongoing observations and paleoclimate data and simple representations of the global carbon cycle and temperature to define emission reductions needed to stabilize climate and avoid potentially disastrous impacts on today’s young people, future generations, and nature.
Journal ArticleDOI
Constraints on the magnitude and patterns of ocean cooling at the Last Glacial Maximum
Claire Waelbroeck,André Paul,Michal Kucera,Antoni Rosell-Melé,Mara Weinelt,Ralph R Schneider,Alan C. Mix,Andrea Abelmann,Leanne K. Armand,Edouard Bard,Stephen Barker,Timothy T. Barrows,Heather M. Benway,Isabel Cacho,Min-Te Chen,Elsa Cortijo,Xavier Crosta,A. de Vernal,Trond Dokken,Josette Duprat,Henry Elderfield,Frédérique Eynaud,Rainer Gersonde,A. Hayes,Maryse Henry,Claude Hillaire-Marcel,C.-C. Huang,Eystein Jansen,Steve Juggins,Nejib Kallel,Thorsten Kiefer,Markus Kienast,L. Labeyrie,Héloïse Leclaire,Laurent Londeix,Sylvie Mangin,Jens Matthiessen,Fabienne Marret,Marius Y. Meland,Ann E Morey,Stefan Mulitza,Uwe Pflaumann,Nicklas G Pisias,T. Radi,André Rochon,Eelco J. Rohling,Laura Sbaffi,C. Schäfer-Neth,Sandrine Solignac,Howard J. Spero,Kazuyo Tachikawa,Jean-Louis Turon +51 more
TL;DR: This article presented an updated synthesis of sea surface temperatures during the Last Glacial Maximum, rigorously defined as the period between 23 and 19 thousand years before present, from the Multiproxy Approach for the Reconstruction of the Glacial Ocean Surface (MARGO) project.
