Sustainable Assessment of Alternative Sites for the Construction of a Waste Incineration Plant by Applying WASPAS Method with Single-Valued Neutrosophic Set

Inevitably, the 21st century has initiated a series of developments in the construction industry, leading to its digitalization and resulting in a series of innovative approaches and practices. At the same time, the construction industry, being one of the main global environment polluters, should fulfil well-established, as well as novel, sustainability requirements in order to evolve in harmony with the rising concerns on the availability of natural resources. This overview study aims to present the main developments, research, and scientific challenges in the field of sustainable construction, emphasizing the field of energy. The study aims to present a state-of-the-art scientific discussion on the sustainable built environment topic by analyzing cutting edge topics in the fields of building elements and whole building energy assessment, of indoor air quality and low carbon buildings, as well as on sustainable energy systems and smart buildings. The study also presents the state-of-the-art in existing tools which are adopted for the assessment of the sustainable built environment, including the use of digital tools and building information modelling for the energy assessment of the built environment, as well as the application of Life Cycle Assessment on building-related processes. Cross cutting issues related to the analysis of the building sector in the Industry 4.0 era, such as sustainability management topics and environmental geomatics are also discussed. The study concludes in those fields which will be of interest of the scientific community in the following years, towards achieving the goals of the sustainable development of the building sector.

Research Challenges and Advancements in the field of Sustainable Energy Technologies in the Built Environment

The present study proposes a novel integrated SWARA-CRITIC-COPRAS under the Pythagorean fuzzy (PF) environment to evaluate the barriers to developing the sustainable business model innovation (SBMI). To this end, the barriers were identified through the literature review and evaluated by three decision experts using linguistic variables. The PF-SWARA and the PF-CRITIC method were applied to calculate the weight of the subjective and objective barriers, and the PF-COPRAS was applied to evaluate alternatives concerning the identified weighted barriers, and sensitivity and comparative analyses were performed to evaluate the proposed method's performance. The results indicated that “lack of awareness” is the most significant barrier to SBMI and the proposed method is accurate, applicable, and reliable due to its sensitivity to weight changes

A Novel Pythogorean Fuzzy-SWARA-CRITIC-COPRAS Method for Evaluating the Barriers to Developing Business Model Innovation for Sustainability

Recent disasters have emphasized the need for further action to protect businesses and society from long-term sustainability threats. We believe that the crisis is hastening nascent ESG trends, and that the increased focus on a company’s environmental and social impact will last long after crises have passed. We refined three fundamental concepts that guide our thinking on investing based on environmental, social, and governance factors as our approach to sustainable investing has evolved. The ESG factor assessments are more of an inherent aspect of a sound investment process than a separate investment discipline. When ESG variables are considered, the focus is on long-term risk adjusted investment returns. Investors should choose the strategy that best matches with their goals and interests. ESG investing is not a simple yes or no answer. The research gap extracted from the previous studies is to determine the relationship among the influencing factors of ESG and its priority with their driving and dependence capabilities. We used an ISM Approach to uncover the interrelationships and influencing behavior among the elements for considering ESG in investment after conducting a thorough literature research and consulting with experts. Here interpretive structural modeling (ISM) was used to explore the links among such extracted factors and its interdependencies. There was also focus on the short-term and long-term factors to achieve our desired objective. Our research will assist businesses in attracting and obtaining finance. The results of this analysis will be helpful for leaders to understand the impact of ESG on the investment aspects of an organization.

Factors Affecting ESG towards Impact on Investment: A Structural Approach

Measuring and monitoring sustainability plays an essential role in impact assessment of global changes and development. Multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) represents a reliable and adequate technique for assessing sustainability, especially in the field of municipal buildings management, where numerous parameters and criteria are involved. This study presents an MCDM model for the sustainable decision-making, tailored to municipal residential buildings facilities management. The main outcome of this research concerned normalized and weighted decision-making matrixes, based on the complex proportion assessment (COPRAS) and weighted aggregated sum product assessment (WASPAS) methods, applied for ranking investment alternatives related to the management of the buildings. The delivered model was applied to 20 municipal buildings of Kaunas city municipality, located in Lithuania, which an EU member state employing practices and regulations in accordance with the EU acquis, as well as a former Soviet Republic. The proposed model aspires to enhance sustainability practices in the management of municipal buildings and to demonstrate a solid tool that will allow informed decision-making in the building management sector.

An MCDM Model for Sustainable Decision-Making in Municipal Residential Buildings Facilities Management

Financial supporting schemes for the energy upgrading of the building sector in Europe constitute one of the major policies of the European Union (EU). Since the beginning of the 2000s, dozens of funding programs and initiatives have been announced by the European Commission (EC). It is a fact that the majority of these policies have borne fruit, as the metrics on both energy savings in the building sector and the promotion of renewable energy in the built environment have turned the EU into a global pioneer. This paper attempts to give a brief overview of the main policy and financial tools for the energy upgrading of the built environment in Europe. Emphasis is placed on three major mechanisms, which concern different-scale projects: crowdfunding projects, public-private co-financing projects, and large-scale projects funded by financial institutions such as European Investment Bank (EIB). Reference is also made to recently implemented EU funded research programs in this field. This work aspires to constitute a reference study for future research activities in the field of financial supporting schemes for energy upgrading of buildings in Europe.

An Overview of the Existing Schemes and Research Trends in Financing the Energy Upgrade of Buildings in Europe

The quality of satisfying the social and economic needs of residents by the municipality depends on the effective use of municipal real estate, its abundance and quality. The municipal property makes up the basis for their economic activities. To fulfil one of the main municipal goals, i.e. to promote and develop local government, a great deal of attention must be directed to the improvement of municipal real estate management, as well as the optimization and increase of management efficiency of real estate necessary for fulfilling municipal functions. Since municipalities own a great deal of real estate unsuitable for carrying out their functions, the paper presents a methodology for reducing the amount of real estate objects redundant for municipal functions. To achieve this, a distinction between functional-objective real estate for fulfilling municipal functions, and real estate that no longer has such a purpose has been made.
