This paper gives a brief review and short summary on physiological and biochemical evaluations of human mental workloads. Physiological evaluations consist of peripheral physiological evaluations and central physiological evaluations. Peripheral physiological evaluations mainly include heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV) recorded from electrocardiograms (ECGs), blood pressure, respiration, eye blinks, skin potential, and hemodynamic indices. Central physiological evaluations mainly refer to the cerebral cortex, including electroencephalograms (EEGs) and event-related potentials (ERPs). Biochemical evaluations mainly include catecholamines, cortisol, and immunoglobulin A (IgA) collected from blood, salivary, or urinary samples. Since it's founding, NASA has been dedicated to the advancement of aeronautics and space science. The NASA scientific and technical information (STI) program plays a key part in helping NASA maintain this important role. The NASA STI program operates under the auspices of the Agency Chief Information Officer. It collects, organizes, provides for archiving, and disseminates NASA's STI. The NASA STI program provides access to the NASA Aeronautics and Space Database and its public interface, the NASA Technical Report Server, thus providing one of the largest collections of aeronautical and space science STI in the world. Results are published in both non-NASA channels and by NASA in the NASA STI Report Series, which includes the following report types: • TECHNICAL PUBLICATION. Reports of completed research or a major significant phase of research that present the results of NASA Programs and include extensive data or theoretical analysis. Includes compilations of significant scientific and technical data and information deemed to be of continuing reference value. NASA counterpart of peer-reviewed formal professional papers but has less stringent limitations on manuscript length and extent of graphic presentations. • TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM. Scientific and technical findings that are preliminary or of specialized interest, e.g., quick release reports, working papers, and bibliographies that contain minimal annotation. Does not contain extensive analysis. • CONTRACTOR REPORT. Scientific and technical findings by NASA-sponsored contractors and grantees. • CONFERENCE PUBLICATION. Collected papers from scientific and technical conferences, symposia, seminars, or other meetings sponsored or co-sponsored by NASA. • SPECIAL PUBLICATION. Scientific, technical, or historical information from NASA programs, projects, and missions, often concerned with subjects having substantial public interest. • TECHNICAL TRANSLATION. English-language translations of foreign scientific and technical material pertinent to NASA's mission. Measuring and Evaluating Workload: A Primer

Standardization is superior to traditional methods of teaching open vascular simulation

Introduction: A new noise-reduced landing approach was tested – a Segmented Continuous Descent Approach (SCDA) - with regard to the resulting workload on pilots.
Methods: Workload of 40 pilots was measured using physiological (heart rate, blood pressure, blink frequency, saliva cortisol concentration) and psychological (fatigue, sleepiness, tension and task load) parameters. Approaches were conducted in A320 and A330 full-flight simulators during night shift. SCDA was compared to the standard Low Drag Low Power (LDLP) procedure as reference.
Results: Mean heart rate and blood pressure during the SCDA were not elevated, partly even significantly reduced (on average by 5 bpm and 4 mmHg regarding the flying Captain). Cortisol levels did not change significantly with mean values of 0.9 to 1.2 ng/ml. Landing was the most demanding segment of both approaches as indicated by significant increases in heart rate and decreases in blink frequency. Subjective task load was low. 
Discussion: Both approach procedures caused a similar workload level. Interpreting the results, methodological limitations have to be considered, e.g. the artificial and controlled airspace situation in the flight simulator. Nevertheless, it can be concluded that under these ideal conditions, the SCDA is operable without a higher workload for pilots compared to the common LDLP.

Pilot workload during approaches: comparison of simulated standard and noise-abatement profiles.

Im Rahmen des Forschungsverbundes „Leiser Verkehr“ wurde untersucht, inwieweit ein neues Anflugverfahren hinsichtlich der Flugsicherheit und der Akzeptanz durch die Piloten durchfuhrbar ist. Zu diesem Zweck wurden zwei Verfahren – ein Standardverfahren (LDLP) und ein unter Larmaspekten weiter verbessertes Verfahren (SCDA) – in zwei Full-Flight-Simulatoren (A320 und A330) verglichen. Die Fliegbarkeit wurde mit 40 Piloten bzgl. technischer, psychologischer und physiologischer Parameter untersucht. Jeweils zwei Piloten fuhrten in einer Nacht acht Landeanfluge von jeweils 13 min. Dauer auf den Flughafen Munchen durch. Jede Simulation begann bei 9000 Fus Hohe und endete mit der Landung. Abwechselnd (als „pilot flying“ bzw. als „pilot non-flying“) wurden zwei LDLP und 6 SCDA absolviert. Neben technischen Grosen (z.B. Flughohe, Sinkrate, Geschwindigkeit, Schub, Fahren der Landeklappen und des Fahrwerks) wurden psychologische (z.B. Ermudung, Arbeitsbelastung, Akzeptanz, Aufgabenerfullung) und physiologische Parameter (z.B. EKG, EEG, EOG, Blutdruck, Cortisol) kontinuierlich oder diskret erhoben. Ein Debriefing mit umfangreichen Fragebogen komplettierte jede Versuchsnacht. Die geflogenen Bahnverlaufe zeigten eine Dispersion von der Vorgabe, wenn ein Sinkflug eingeleitet werden sollte. Der SCDA fuhrte zu einer Larmreduktion zwischen 2 und 5 dB im L max -Bereich zwischen 50 und 70 dB, daruber und darunter ergaben sich Erhohungen im Vergleich zum LDLP. Die physiologischen Daten und die regelmasigen Befragungen wahrend der Simulationen ergaben keine relevanten Unterschiede, die auf die unterschiedlichen Anflugverfahren zuruckzufuhren waren. Auch die fliegerische Leistung wurde als gleich gut beurteilt. Dagegen differenzierten die Piloten im Debriefing zwischen den Verfahren, wobei das SCDA haufig als nicht so sicher und arbeitsintensiver bezeichnet wurde sowie die Akzeptanz geringer war. Das SCDA kann als grundsatzlich durchfuhrbar und fliegbar bewertet werden. Einschrankungen ergeben sich z.Z. aus den Randbedingungen der Untersuchung und den technischen Unzulanglichkeiten. Es wird empfohlen, weitere Untersuchungen unter realen Flugbedingungen durchzufuhren, und technische Verbesserungen und Erprobungen zur Pilotenunterstutzung zur weiteren Beurteilung des SCDA vorzunehmen.

Untersuchung der Fliegbarkeit von lärmoptimierten Anflugverfahren durch den Piloten

Im Rahmen eines EU-Projekts wurde ein Trainingsprogramm zur Effektivierung des Situationsbewusstseins und Gefahrenmanagements bei Flugzeugbesatzungen entwickelt Das Trainingsprogramm mit dem Namen "ESSAI" ('Enhanced Safety through Situation Awareness Integration in training') beinhaltet realistische Aufgabenstellungen zum Erwerb und Erhalt relevanter Kompetenzen, wie Planung, Antizipation, Fehlerdiagnose, Fehlerbereinigung usw Das Trainingspaket besteht aus funf Phasen beginnend mit der Bewusstmachung bis hin zum Transfer in den Linienalltag Im A330-Forschungssimulator der TU Berlin wurde bei 32 Verkehrsflugzeugfuhrern eine Wirkungskontrolle durchgefuhrt Die Trainingseffekte zum Situationsbewusstsein waren signifikant uber ein weites Spektrum von Variablen aus den Bereichen Kenntnisse, Einstellungen und Leistungsverhalten Auch fur den Praxistransfer in den Liniendienst konnten positive Erfahrungen bei zwei Fluggesellschaften nachgewiesen werden Der Beitrag bietet einen Uberblick uber die Inhalte des ESSAI-Trainingsprogramms sowie eine Diskussion der Ergebnisse aus dem Trainingsexperiments
