TL;DR: In this article, the design, characterization and theoretical analysis of a capacitive vibration energy harvester is presented, which is intended for operation in a wide frequency band due to the combination of stop-end effects and a strong biasing electrical field.
Abstract: This paper presents an advanced study including the design, characterization and theoretical analysis of a capacitive vibration energy harvester. Although based on a resonant electromechanical device, it is intended for operation in a wide frequency band due to the combination of stop-end effects and a strong biasing electrical field. The electrostatic transducer has an interdigited comb geometry with in-plane motion, and is obtained through a simple batch process using two masks. A continuous conditioning circuit is used for the characterization of the transducer. A nonlinear model of the coupled system ‘transduce-conditioning circuit’ is presented and analyzed employing two different semi-analytical techniques together with precise numerical modelling. Experimental results are in good agreement with results obtained from numerical modelling. With the 1 g amplitude of harmonic external acceleration at atmospheric pressure, the system transducer-conditioning circuit has a half-power bandwidth of more than 30% and converts more than 2 μ Wo f the power of input mechanical vibrations over the range of 140 and 160 Hz. The harvester has also been characterized under stochastic noise-like input vibrations.

TL;DR: In this paper, a batch-fabricated, low-frequency and wideband MEMS electrostatic vibration energy harvester (e-VEH), which implements corona-charged vertical electrets and nonlinear elastic stoppers, is presented.
Abstract: This paper reports a batch-fabricated, low-frequency and wideband MEMS electrostatic vibration energy harvester (e-VEH), which implements corona-charged vertical electrets and nonlinear elastic stoppers. A numeric model is used to perform parametric study, where we observe a wideband bi-modality resulting from nonlinearity. The nonlinear stoppers improve the bandwidth and induce a frequency-up feature at low frequencies. When the e-VEH works with a bias of 45 V, the power reaches a maximum value of 6.6 μW at 428 Hz and 2.0 g rms, and is above 1 μW at 50 Hz. When the frequency drops below 60 Hz, a 'frequency-up' conversion behavior is observed with peaks of power at 34 Hz and 52 Hz. The −3 dB bandwidth is more than 60% of its central frequency, both including and excluding the hysteresis introduced by the nonlinear stoppers. We also perform experiments with wideband Gaussian noise. The device is eventually tested with an RF data transmission setup, where a communication node with an internal temperature sensor is powered. Every 2 min, a data transmission at 868 MHz is performed by the sensor node supplied by the e-VEH, and received at a distance of up to 15 m.

TL;DR: A mixed-signal control unit of a fully integrated semiconductor quantum processor SoC realized in a 22nm FD-SOI technology offers a wide quantum computation window when compared with the 1µs decoherence time of the charge-qubit structures.
Abstract: This paper discloses a mixed-signal control unit of a fully integrated semiconductor quantum processor SoC realized in a 22nm FD-SOI technology. Independent high-resolution DACs that set the amplitude and pulse-width of the control signals were integrated for each qubit, enabling both a programmable semiconductor qubit operation and a per-qubit individual calibration that compensates for the process variability. The lower deco-herence time of the semiconductor charge-qubits as compared to their spin-qubit counterparts was mitigated by using a high frequency of control unit operation. This is facilitated by the co-integration on the same die of the semiconductor quantum structures together with their corresponding classic control circuitry. The main challenge of achieving deep cryogenic operation for the mixed-signal classic control circuit was surpassed by using programmable local heating DACs that slightly boost the local temperature of the control blocks above the average temperature of the die, which needs to be maintained around 4 K to enable a reliable quantum operation. A staged multi-phase operation was adopted for the digital core in order to minimize the quantum decoherence originated in digital noise injection. The high-frequency clock tree and divider allows the generation of sub-20 ps fast edge control pulses with programmable widths down to 166 ps. This offers a wide quantum computation window when compared with the 1µs decoherence time of the charge-qubit structures.

TL;DR: In this paper, the principle of capacitive kinetic energy harvesters based on a spring-mass system is described in detail and specific points related to the design and operation of kinetic energy harvesting with a capacitive interface are presented in detail.
Abstract: Harvesting kinetic energy is a good opportunity to power wireless sensor in a vibratory environment. Besides classical methods based on electromagnetic and piezoelectric mechanisms, electrostatic transduction has a great perspective in particular when dealing with small devices based on MEMS technology. This book describes in detail the principle of such capacitive Kinetic Energy Harvesters based on a spring-mass system. Specific points related to the design and operation of kinetic energy harvesters (KEHs) with a capacitive interface are presented in detail: advanced studies on their nonlinear features, typical conditioning circuits and practical MEMS fabrication.

TL;DR: A unified theory describing electrical and electromechanical properties of an important and wide class of conditioning circuits: those implementing a rectangular charge-voltage cycle and an optimization approach common to all configurations is proposed.
Abstract: Capacitive kinetic energy harvesters (KEH) employ conditioning circuits which achieve a dynamic biasing of the transducer's variable capacitor. This paper, composed of two articles Part 1 and Part 2, proposes a unified theory describing electrical and electromechanical properties of an important and wide class of conditioning circuits: those implementing a rectangular charge-voltage cycle. The article Part 1 introduces a basic configuration of conditioning circuit implementing an ideal rectangular QV cycle, and discusses its known practical implementations: the Roundy charge pump with different flyback mechanisms, and configurations based on the Bennet's doubler. In Part 1, the analysis is done in the electrical domain, without accounting for electromechanical coupling, while in Part 2, the full electromechanical system is analyzed. An optimization approach common to all configurations is proposed. A comparison is made between different topologies and operation modes, based on the maximal energy converted in one cycle under similar electrical and mechanical conditions. The last section discusses practical implementation of circuits with smart and adaptive behavior, and presents experimental results obtained with state-of-the art MEMS capacitive KEH devices.

Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: This paper presents an update to the authors' previous review paper by summarizing the notable developments in the field of piezoelectric energy harvesting through the past decade.
Abstract: Energy harvesting technologies have been explored by researchers for more than two decades as an alternative to conventional power sources (e.g. batteries) for small-sized and low-power electronic devices. The limited life-time and necessity for periodic recharging or replacement of batteries has been a consistent issue in portable, remote, and implantable devices. Ambient energy can usually be found in the form of solar energy, thermal energy, and vibration energy. Amongst these energy sources, vibration energy presents a persistent presence in nature and manmade structures. Various materials and transduction mechanisms have the ability to convert vibratory energy to useful electrical energy, such as piezoelectric, electromagnetic, and electrostatic generators. Piezoelectric transducers, with their inherent electromechanical coupling and high power density compared to electromagnetic and electrostatic transducers, have been widely explored to generate power from vibration energy sources. A topical review of piezoelectric energy harvesting methods was carried out and published in this journal by the authors in 2007. Since 2007, countless researchers have introduced novel materials, transduction mechanisms, electrical circuits, and analytical models to improve various aspects of piezoelectric energy harvesting devices. Additionally, many researchers have also reported novel applications of piezoelectric energy harvesting technology in the past decade. While the body of literature in the field of piezoelectric energy harvesting has grown significantly since 2007, this paper presents an update to the authors' previous review paper by summarizing the notable developments in the field of piezoelectric energy harvesting through the past decade.
