TL;DR: This review focuses on the synthesis, protection, functionalization, and application of magnetic nanoparticles, as well as the magnetic properties of nanostructured systems.
Abstract: This review focuses on the synthesis, protection, functionalization, and application of magnetic nanoparticles, as well as the magnetic properties of nanostructured systems. Substantial progress in the size and shape control of magnetic nanoparticles has been made by developing methods such as co-precipitation, thermal decomposition and/or reduction, micelle synthesis, and hydrothermal synthesis. A major challenge still is protection against corrosion, and therefore suitable protection strategies will be emphasized, for example, surfactant/polymer coating, silica coating and carbon coating of magnetic nanoparticles or embedding them in a matrix/support. Properly protected magnetic nanoparticles can be used as building blocks for the fabrication of various functional systems, and their application in catalysis and biotechnology will be briefly reviewed. Finally, some future trends and perspectives in these research areas will be outlined.

TL;DR: In this paper, the synthesis of porous graphitic carbon with a large and accessible surface area via synthesis of carboxyl-containing polymer particles, followed by ion exchange and pyrolysis at low temperature (850 °C).
Abstract: High surface area graphitic carbons are of great interest in emerging applications including catalysis and energy storage because of the well-developed crystalline structure, high electronic conductivity and thermal stability, and satisfactory oxidation resistance at low temperature. We have developed the synthesis of porous graphitic carbon with a large and accessible surface area via synthesis of carboxyl-containing polymer particles, followed by ion exchange and pyrolysis at low temperature (850 °C). The evolution of the graphitic structure together with mesoporosity is temperature dependent, as revealed from the results of X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and nitrogen sorption measurement. Specifically, the development of mesoporosity resulting from continuously catalyzed carbonization by the in situ formed cobalt nanoparticles can be clearly recognized. Further nitric acid oxidation leads to an increase of the pore volume due to the removal of cobalt nanoparticles and opening of c...

TL;DR: It is concluded that the nanowire shell behaves like a two-dimensional diluted antiferromagnet in a field.
Abstract: Employing magnetometry measurements, we have studied ${\mathrm{Co}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ nanowires focusing on the core-shell behavior. We find two magnetic contributions, i.e., a regular antiferromagnetic and an additional irreversible one. The first contribution can be attributed to the antiferromagnetically ordered wire cores. The nature of the second one can be identified using thermoremanent and isothermoremanent magnetizaton curves as magnetic fingerprints of the irreversible magnetization. We conclude that the nanowire shell behaves like a two-dimensional diluted antiferromagnet in a field.

TL;DR: In this article, a simple solid-solid reaction of an iron precursor with ordered mesoporous Co3O4 that had been prepared via nanocasting from mesoporus silica as hard template was investigated via superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry and 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy.
Abstract: The nanocomposite Co3O4/CoFe2O4 heterostructured mesoporous material was produced via a simple solid–solid reaction of an iron precursor with ordered mesoporous Co3O4 that had been prepared via nanocasting from mesoporous silica as hard template. The magnetic behavior of the exchange-coupled antiferromagnetic/ferrimagnetic (AFM/FM) system was investigated via superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry and 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy. The low-temperature magnetization loops of the Co3O4/CoFe2O4 heterostructure present exchange bias under cooling in an applied magnetic field. The antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of Co3O4 is increased due to the proximity of the hard magnetic CoFe2O4 phase. The nanocomposite Co3O4/CoFe2O4 behaves as an exchange coupled system with a cooperative magnetic switching.

TL;DR: Nanostructured materials such as nano-carbons, alloys, metal oxides, and metal sulfides/nitrides have been used as anodes for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.
Abstract: In this paper, the use of nanostructured anode materials for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is reviewed. Nanostructured materials such as nano-carbons, alloys, metal oxides, and metal sulfides/nitrides have been used as anodes for next-generation LIBs with high reversible capacity, fast power capability, good safety, and long cycle life. This is due to their relatively short mass and charge pathways, high transport rates of both lithium ions and electrons, and other extremely charming surface activities. In this review paper, the effect of the nanostructure on the electrochemical performance of these anodes is presented. Their synthesis processes, electrochemical properties, and electrode reaction mechanisms are also discussed. The major goals of this review are to give a broad overview of recent scientific researches and developments of anode materials using novel nanoscience and nanotechnology and to highlight new progresses in using these nanostructured materials to develop high-performance LIBs. Suggestions and outlooks on future research directions in this field are also given.

TL;DR: The problems and major challenges, along with the directions for the synthesis and surface functionalization of iron oxide NPs, are considered and some future trends and prospective in these research areas are also discussed.
Abstract: Surface functionalized magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) are a kind of novel functional materials, which have been widely used in the biotechnology and catalysis. This review focuses on the recent development and various strategies in preparation, structure, and magnetic properties of naked and surface functionalized iron oxide NPs and their corresponding application briefly. In order to implement the practical application, the particles must have combined properties of high magnetic saturation, stability, biocompatibility, and interactive functions at the surface. Moreover, the surface of iron oxide NPs could be modified by organic materials or inorganic materials, such as polymers, biomolecules, silica, metals, etc. The problems and major challenges, along with the directions for the synthesis and surface functionalization of iron oxide NPs, are considered. Finally, some future trends and prospective in these research areas are also discussed.

TL;DR: A critical appraisal of different synthetic approaches to Cu and Cu-based nanoparticles and copper nanoparticles immobilized into or supported on various support materials (SiO2, magnetic support materials, etc.), along with their applications in catalysis.
Abstract: The applications of copper (Cu) and Cu-based nanoparticles, which are based on the earth-abundant and inexpensive copper metal, have generated a great deal of interest in recent years, especially in the field of catalysis. The possible modification of the chemical and physical properties of these nanoparticles using different synthetic strategies and conditions and/or via postsynthetic chemical treatments has been largely responsible for the rapid growth of interest in these nanomaterials and their applications in catalysis. In addition, the design and development of novel support and/or multimetallic systems (e.g., alloys, etc.) has also made significant contributions to the field. In this comprehensive review, we report different synthetic approaches to Cu and Cu-based nanoparticles (metallic copper, copper oxides, and hybrid copper nanostructures) and copper nanoparticles immobilized into or supported on various support materials (SiO2, magnetic support materials, etc.), along with their applications i...
