Journal ArticleDOI
Impacts of biodiversity loss on ocean ecosystem services.
Boris Worm,Edward B. Barbier,Nicola Beaumont,J. Emmett Duffy,Carl Folke,Carl Folke,Benjamin S. Halpern,Jeremy B. C. Jackson,Jeremy B. C. Jackson,Heike K. Lotze,Fiorenza Micheli,Stephen R. Palumbi,Enric Sala,Kimberley A. Selkoe,John J. Stachowicz,Reg Watson +15 more
TL;DR: The authors analyzed local experiments, long-term regional time series, and global fisheries data to test how biodiversity loss affects marine ecosystem services across temporal and spatial scales, concluding that marine biodiversity loss is increasingly impairing the ocean's capacity to provide food, maintain water quality, and recover from perturbations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Global Trajectories of the Long-Term Decline of Coral Reef Ecosystems
John M. Pandolfi,Roger Bradbury,Enric Sala,Terry P. Hughes,Karen A. Bjorndal,Richard G. Cooke,Deborah A. McArdle,Loren McClenachan,Marah J. H. Newman,Gustavo Paredes,Robert R. Warner,Jeremy B. C. Jackson,Jeremy B. C. Jackson +12 more
TL;DR: Records are compiled, extending back thousands of years, of the status and trends of seven major guilds of carnivores, herbivores, and architectural species from 14 regions that indicate reefs will not survive without immediate protection from human exploitation over large spatial scales.
Journal ArticleDOI
Response to Comments on "Impacts of Biodiversity Loss on Ocean Ecosystem Services"
Boris Worm,Edward B. Barbier,Nicola Beaumont,J. Emmett Duffy,Carl Folke,Benjamin S. Halpern,Jeremy B. C. Jackson,Heike K. Lotze,Fiorenza Micheli,Stephen R. Palumbi,Enric Sala,Kimberley A. Selkoe,John J. Stachowicz,Reg Watson +13 more
TL;DR: It is shown that globally declining fisheries catch trends cannot be explained by random processes and are consistent with declining stock abundance trends, and may provide a benchmark against which to assess the effectiveness of conservation measures.
Journal ArticleDOI
Baselines and Degradation of Coral Reefs in the Northern Line Islands
Stuart A. Sandin,Jennifer E. Smith,Edward E. DeMartini,Elizabeth A. Dinsdale,Simon D. Donner,Alan M. Friedlander,Talina Konotchick,Machel Malay,James E. Maragos,David Obura,Olga Pantos,Gustav Paulay,Morgan Richie,Forest Rohwer,Robert E. Schroeder,Sheila M. Walsh,Jeremy B. C. Jackson,Jeremy B. C. Jackson,Nancy Knowlton,Nancy Knowlton,Enric Sala,Enric Sala +21 more
TL;DR: Protection from overfishing and pollution appears to increase the resilience of reef ecosystems to the effects of global warming, and reefs without people exhibited less coral disease and greater coral recruitment relative to more inhabited reefs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Interaction strength combinations and the overfishing of a marine food web
TL;DR: By using a food web model, it is shown that interaction strength combinations reduce the likelihood of trophic cascades after the overfishing of top predators, and the potential for strong community-wide effects remains a threat.
