Abstract: Complementary numerical and experimental studies were made of the heat transfer characteristics of a hydrodynamicaUy developed turbulent flow passing through a flat rectangular duct. One, of the principal walls of the duct was maintained at a uniform temperature different from the fluid inlet temperature, while the other walls of the duct were adiabanc. Results were obtained for the local, quasi-local, and average Nusselt numbers in the thermal entrance region and for the fully developed Nusselt number. Both heal and mass transfer versions of the problem were investigated. Excellent agreement prevailed between the experimentally and numerically determined quasi-local Sherwood numbers at a succession of axial stations in the mass transfer entrance region, thereby establishing the analytical model and the numerical solution method. Heat transfer results for airflow were obtained from the numerical solutions for Reynolds numbers between 10,000 and 100,000. It was found that away from the immediate neighborho...

TL;DR: In this paper, a one-sided-heated, vertical channel in the presence of a vent opening in the unheated wall was studied both experimentally and numerically, and numerical solutions provided information on both the local and average Nusselt numbers, cross-channel temperature profiles and the rates of fluid flow through the opening at the bottom of the channel and through the vent.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the melting of a phase-change medium contained in a circular tube when the heating at the tube wall is non-uniform around the circumference, and found that the direct contact mode of melting was achieved consistently at an inclination of 30° and intermittently at a inclination of 15°.

TL;DR: Experiments were performed to measure the evaporative mass transfer from a partially filled, slot-like container recessed in the floor of a flat rectangular duct through which turbulent air flow was passed as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Experiments were performed to measure the evaporative mass transfer from a partially filled, slot-like container recessed in the floor of a flat rectangular duct through which turbulent air flow was passed. Toluene and cumene were used as the evaporating liquids, and systematic variations were made of the Reynolds number and of the distance between the top of the container and the surface of the evaporating liquid. The measured Sherwood numbers displayed unconventional dependences on both the Reynolds and Schmidt numbers as well as a complex dependence on the top-to-surface distance.
